Tamilisai Soundararajan was born on June 2, 1961. She is an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She served as the second Governor of Telangana. She also held the additional role of Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from February 18, 2021, to March 18, 2024. Before these important roles, she was the National Secretary and the head of the BJP in Tamil Nadu.

On March 18, 2024, Tamilisai Soundararajan stepped down from her positions as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. She then rejoined the BJP on March 20, 2024.

Her Life and Education

Tamilisai Soundararajan was born in Kaliyakkavilai, Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. Her father, Kumari Ananthan, was a Member of Parliament and a senior leader in the Congress party. Her husband, Mr. Soundarajan, is a medical doctor.

She studied at Ethiraj College for Women. Later, she earned her medical degree (MBBS) from Madras Medical College in Chennai. She specialized in obstetrics and gynaecology at Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. She also received advanced training in sonology and fertility treatments in Canada.

Before entering politics full-time, she worked as an assistant professor. She taught at Ramachandra Medical College in Chennai for five years. She has two children, both of whom are doctors.

In 2018, she received the "International Rising Star of the Year" award. This award recognized her hard work for society and her efforts to promote equality for women.

Tamilisai Soundararajan grew up in a political family. This made her interested in politics from a young age. She was even elected as a student leader during her time at Madras Medical College.

She held many different roles within the Tamil Nadu BJP unit. She started as a secretary in the Medical Wing in 1999. Over the years, she became the State General Secretary, State Vice-President, and then the National Secretary of the BJP in 2013.

On September 1, 2019, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, appointed her as the Governor of Telangana. She was the first woman to hold this important position in the state. She officially took charge on September 9, 2019. Later, on February 16, 2021, she was given the additional responsibility of Puducherry (union territory). She was the fifth woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of this Union Territory. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she visited hospitals to support healthcare workers. She also encouraged people to get vaccinated.

Soundararajan has run in several elections for Member of Parliament (MP) and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). While she has not won these elections, she has campaigned widely across the state. For example, in the 2019 Indian general election, she ran against Kanimozhi Karunanidhi in Thoothukkudi.

Her Work in Media

Tamilisai Soundararajan has also been active in media. She hosted a TV show for students and children on the Tamil channel Raj TV. This program, which helped kids improve their speaking skills, ran for over 10 years.

She also hosted a weekly show for women on the Doordarshan Channel. This program, called "Magalir Panchayat" (Women's Court), was on air for more than five years. She has also taken part in many political debates on various TV channels.

Her Roles and Views

Managing Temples

Tamilisai Soundararajan believes that temples should be managed by groups of people who are devoted to the temple. She thinks these groups should be made up of people who believe in the temple's faith.

As Governor of Telangana

Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan became the first woman Governor of Telangana in 2019. She was the second governor of the state since it was formed in 2014. She was also the youngest among all state governors at the time.

  • Supporting Education: As Governor, she helped create an online platform called 'Chancellor Connect'. This platform helps connect with former students of universities.
  • Awards for Excellence: Her office, along with the Telangana State Council of Higher Education, started the 'Chancellor's Awards'. These awards recognize the best teachers, best research, and best universities.
  • Health and Nutrition: Dr. Tamilisai also organized meetings with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Hyderabad. Their goal was to create a plan to improve nutrition for tribal communities in Telangana.

In April 2023, the Telangana Government approached the Supreme Court. This was because Soundararajan had not approved 10 bills passed by the state legislature.

Tamilisai Soundararajan resigned from her roles as Telangana Governor and Puducherry Lieutenant-Governor on March 18, 2024. She did this to prepare for the 2024 Indian general elections. She ran for election from the Chennai South area in Tamil Nadu.

As Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry

Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan took on the additional role of Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry on February 18, 2021. The Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Justice Sanjeeb Banerjee, gave her the oath of office. Tamilisai took her oath in Tamil. She resigned from this position on March 18, 2024.
