H. Vasanthakumar (born April 14, 1950, died August 28, 2020) was a well-known businessman and politician from Tamil Nadu, India. His full name was Harikrishnan Nadar Vasanthakumar.
He was the person who started and led Vasanth & Co. This company became one of the biggest stores for home appliances in Tamil Nadu. He also founded Vasanth TV, a popular Tamil satellite TV channel.
Vasanthakumar served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kanyakumari area in the 17th Lok Sabha. He was elected in the 2019 Indian general election. Before that, he was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Nanguneri area in Tamil Nadu. He won these elections in 2006 and 2016.

Early Life and Education
Vasanthakumar was born on April 14, 1950. His birthplace was Agastheeswaram in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. His parents were Harikrishnan Nadar and Thangammal.
He went to a local school called a Panchayat board school in Kanniyakumari. Later, he earned a bachelor's degree in Tamil literature. He also completed a master's degree from Madurai Kamaraj University. His older brother, Kumari Ananthan, was also a politician. He belonged to the Indian National Congress party.
Business Success
Vasanthakumar began his career as a salesman in the early 1970s. He worked for different companies, including VGP. In 1978, he decided to start his own business.
Starting Vasanth & Co
He opened his first home appliance store called Vasanth & Co. The first store was in the T. Nagar area of Chennai. His company grew very quickly. It became one of the top retail chains in the region. Vasanth & Co opened stores all over Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.
Vasanthakumar and his company were pioneers in India. They were among the first to sell electronics on monthly payment plans. They also offered centralized support for customers after they bought items.
Founding Vasanth TV
In 2008, Vasanthakumar also started a Tamil satellite television channel. This channel was named Vasanth TV.
Political Journey
Vasanthakumar started his political journey with the Indian National Congress party. He took on many local roles within the party.
First Election Wins
His first time running for election was in 2006. He became an MLA for the Nanguneri area in Tamil Nadu. He won against S.P. Sooryakumar from the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. This was a big win for the Congress party. They had not won that seat in three decades.
During his campaign, he promised to set up a Special economic zone in Nanguneri. This zone would include a hi-tech park.
Member of Parliament
In 2014, he ran for the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha constituency. He lost that election to Pon Radhakrishnan.
He served as an MLA for Nanguneri again in 2016. He continued in this role until 2019. In 2019, he became an MP for the 17th Lok Sabha. He represented the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha constituency. He won this election by a large number of votes. He defeated the sitting minister, Pon Radhakrishnan, by over 250,000 votes.
Vasanthakumar was also the working President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC). He held this position from 2019 until his death in 2020. Before that, he was the Vice-President of the TNCC. He also led the TNCC Traders wing.
His Writings
Vasanthakumar wrote a series of three books about his life. These books were in Tamil. The series was called "Vetri Padikattu" – "வெற்றிப் படிக்கட்டு". This means "Ladder of Success" in English. The books focused on how he became a successful businessman. They also talked about his efforts to help the community.
Passing Away
Vasanthakumar passed away on August 28, 2020. He died from problems caused by COVID-19. He was being treated at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. He had been admitted to the hospital on August 10, 2020. He was on life support before he died.
Many important people shared their sadness after his death. These included the President Ram Nath Kovind and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed their condolences.
He is survived by his wife, Tamil Selvi, his two sons, and one daughter. His wife was also getting treatment for COVID-19 at the time of his death.
