Nanguneri Special Economic Zone (SEZ)
Nanguneri is home to a Special Economic Zone, often called an SEZ. An SEZ is a special area in a country where business and trade rules are different from the rest of the country. This is done to encourage companies to set up factories and create jobs.
The Nanguneri SEZ project began with an agreement signed in 2008. The Indian government approved it in July 2008. This SEZ was planned to help the region grow economically.
One of the early goals for the Nanguneri SEZ was to produce television sets. This was part of a plan by the Tamil Nadu government to distribute color TVs. The government also announced plans to build a "pharma park" within the SEZ. This park would be a large area for pharmaceutical companies to make medicines.
The pharma park was planned to cover about 250 acres (1 square kilometer). It was expected to attract many large and small medicine manufacturers. This would create many direct and indirect jobs for people in the area. It was estimated that medicines worth over ₹500 crore (a large sum of money) would be made there.
The Nanguneri SEZ aims to attract various industries. These include companies that make electronic parts, consumer electronics, and precision engineering products. It also plans to host information technology (IT) and biotechnology companies. The goal is to create a modern industrial area with good facilities.
