Om Birla (born 23 November 1962) is an Indian politician who serves as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha is the lower house of India's Parliament, where important laws are discussed and made. As the Speaker, Om Birla's job is like a referee in a sports game. He makes sure that debates are fair and that all rules are followed.
He was first elected as Speaker in June 2019 and was re-elected for a second time in June 2024. This was a big achievement, as he was the first person in 20 years to be re-elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) after having served as the Speaker.
Birla is an MP representing the Kota area in Rajasthan. He has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party for his entire political career.

Early Life and Education
Om Birla was born in Kota, Rajasthan, to Shrikrishna Birla and Shakuntala Devi. He grew up in a Marwari Hindu family.
For his education, he earned a master's degree in commerce. He studied at the Government Commerce College in Kota and later at Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University in Ajmer. In 1991, he married Amita Birla, and they have two daughters named Akansha and Anjali.

Om Birla has had a long career in politics, starting at the state level and moving up to the national government.
Working in Rajasthan's Government
Before becoming a national leader, Birla was a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. This is the group of leaders who make laws for the state of Rajasthan. He was elected three times to represent the Kota South area.
- His first victory was in 2003, where he won against a candidate from the Congress party.
- He won again in 2008 with a large number of votes.
- In 2013, he won his third election by an even bigger margin, with almost 50,000 more votes than his opponent.
From 2003 to 2008, he also served as a Parliamentary Secretary in the Rajasthan government, which is similar to being a junior minister.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 2014, Om Birla was elected to the Lok Sabha, India's national Parliament, representing the people of Kota. He was elected again in 2019 and 2024, making him a three-time MP.
As an MP, he was part of important groups, including the Standing Committee on Energy. He also worked on a committee for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which helps support people in need.
Leading the Lok Sabha as Speaker
In June 2019, Om Birla was chosen as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Many people were surprised by this choice, but he quickly showed he was right for the job. During his first term, many important bills were passed in the Lok Sabha under his guidance.
In June 2024, he was elected as Speaker for a second time in a row. This made him one of the few people to hold this important position twice.
Representing India Around the World
As the Speaker, Om Birla has traveled to many countries to meet with leaders from other parliaments. These visits help build friendships between countries and share ideas about how to run a democracy.
- Austria and Italy (2021): He attended meetings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), an organization for parliaments from all over the world.
- G20 Summit in New Delhi (2023): He hosted a meeting for parliamentary speakers from the world's 20 largest economies, known as the G20. They discussed how parliaments can help achieve global goals for a better future.
- South Korea (2024): He visited the Republic of Korea to discuss how technology can help governments work better.
- BRICS Forums (2024-2025): He represented India at meetings of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). In Russia in 2024 and Brazil in 2025, he spoke about making sure government policies help all people.
