Sumitra Mahajan (born April 12, 1943) is an Indian politician. She was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, which is the lower house of the Indian Parliament. She held this important role from 2014 to 2019.
Sumitra Mahajan is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She represented the Indore area in Madhya Pradesh for a very long time, from 1989 to 2019. She was the longest-serving woman Member of Parliament. She also worked as a Union Minister of State from 1999 to 2004. In 2021, she received the Padma Bhushan, which is one of India's highest civilian awards. She is often called Tai by people in her area, which means 'elder sister'.
Early Life and Education
Sumitra Mahajan was born in Chiplun, Maharashtra. Her parents were Usha and Purushottam Sathe. She went to school in Chiplun. Later, she earned her Master of Arts (MA) and Bachelor of Law (LLB) degrees from Indore University. This university is now known as Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya.
After marrying Jayant Mahajan, she moved to Indore. Sumitra Mahajan enjoys reading, listening to music, watching plays, and going to the cinema. She also likes to sing. She has always been inspired by Ahilyabai Holkar, an 18th-century queen. Sumitra Mahajan even wrote a book about Ahilyabai Holkar's life called 'Matoshree'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched this book in 2017.
Starting Her Political Journey
Sumitra Mahajan began her political career in 1982. She started as a corporator in the Indore Municipal Corporation. A corporator is a local elected official who helps manage city affairs. In 1984, she was elected as the Deputy Mayor of the Indore Municipal Corporation.
Her first time running for the Lok Sabha elections was in 1989. She won this election against Prakash Chandra Sethi, who was a former Chief Minister. This was a big win for her.
Leading the Lok Sabha
On June 6, 2014, Sumitra Mahajan was chosen as the Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha. Everyone agreed on her selection. The Speaker is like the referee of the Lok Sabha. They make sure debates run smoothly and rules are followed.
Before becoming Speaker, she was part of the 'Panel of Chairmen' in the Lok Sabha. This group helps the Speaker manage the house. As Speaker, she made a notable decision in August 2015. She suspended 25 Congress Members of Parliament for five days. This was because they were causing disruptions in the House.
