Sumitra Mahajan was born in Chiplun, Maharashtra. Her parents were Usha and Purushottam Sathe. She completed her higher education at Indore University, which is now known as Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya. She earned degrees in both Arts (MA) and Law (LLB).
