The Governor of Jharkhand is like the official head of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Imagine them as the state's main representative. The President of India chooses who becomes the governor.
Even though all the state's official business is done in the governor's name, the real power lies with the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister is a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly and leads the main political party. The governor's official home is called Raj Bhavan in Ranchi.
The role of the Governor of Jharkhand started when the state was formed in November 2000. This happened when Bihar was divided, following the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000. The very first governor was Prabhat Kumar, who served from 2000 to 2002. The person currently holding this important position is Santosh Gangwar.
What Does a Governor Do?
The governor has several important jobs and powers:
- Executive powers: These are about managing the state, making appointments, and removing certain officials.
- Legislative powers: These relate to making laws and working with the state's law-making body, like the Vidhan Sabha.
- Discretionary powers: These are special powers the governor can use based on their own judgment.
Besides these powers, the Governor of Jharkhand is also the head of all state universities in Jharkhand. This means they oversee many universities, including Binod Bihari Mahto Koyalanchal University, Birsa Agricultural University, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Jharkhand Raksha Shakti University, Jharkhand University of Technology, Kolhan University, Nilamber-Pitamber University, Ranchi University, Sido Kanhu Murmu University, and Vinoba Bhave University.
