Tiruppur is a busy city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It sits on the banks of the Noyyal river. It's the fourth largest city area in Tamil Nadu. Tiruppur is also the main city of the Tiruppur district. The city is managed by the Tiruppur Municipal Corporation, which started in 2008.

Long ago, from the 1st to the 4th centuries CE, the Cheras ruled this area. Later, different empires like the Cholas and the Vijayanagara Empire took over. In the 18th century, it became part of the Kingdom of Mysore and then the British Raj.

After India became independent in 1947, Tiruppur was part of the Coimbatore district. In 2009, it became the capital of the new Tiruppur district. While it used to be mostly about farming, Tiruppur is now famous for its textile and knitwear industries. It's a huge hub for making clothes. In 2021–22, Tiruppur sent out clothes worth 480 billion US dollars. This was almost 54% of all textile exports from India!

What's in a Name? The Story of Tiruppur

The name "Tiruppur" might come from an old Indian story called the Mahabharata. In this story, cattle that were stolen from the Pandavas (a group of brothers) were brought back by a hero named Arjuna.

The name "Tiruppur" is a mix of two Tamil words:

  • "Thiruppu" means "to turn" or "to return."
  • "oor" means "a place."

So, Tiruppur means "the place where they were returned."

A Look Back: Tiruppur's History

Tiruppur was once part of a region called Kongu Nadu. The Cheras ruled here during the Sangam period, a very old time in history. This area was also on an important trade route for the Romans, connecting India's east and west coasts.

Around the 10th century CE, the medieval Cholas took control. Their old stone carvings even mention the Kanchi Maanadhi (which is the Noyyal River) and the rich sand it left on its banks.

By the 15th century, the Vijayanagara Empire ruled the region. Later, local chiefs called Palayakkarars, who worked for the Madurai Nayaks, governed the area. In the late 1700s, the Kingdom of Mysore took over after some wars. But after Tipu Sultan was defeated in the Anglo-Mysore Wars, the British East India Company added Tiruppur to their Madras Presidency in 1799.

For a long time, Tiruppur was a farming town with irrigated fields. But in the 1970s, many farmers started small businesses related to textiles. This led to a huge growth in the textile industry. Many small factories worked together, helping the city become a major textile center.

In 2008, Tiruppur became a municipal corporation. Then, in 2009, a new Tiruppur district was created, with Tiruppur as its main city. This new district was made from parts of the Coimbatore district and Erode district.

Keeping Tiruppur Clean: Environmental Issues

Like many industrial towns, Tiruppur has faced challenges with pollution. Farmers in and around Tiruppur have had problems because factories released dirty water into the Noyyal River and other water sources. This untreated water, often full of dyes and chemicals, was sometimes secretly dumped into drains or open areas, especially early in the morning or when it rained.

In 2015, the Madras High Court ordered that textile factories must follow a strict rule called Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD). This means that no dirty water should be released from the factories. If factories didn't follow this rule, their dyeing and bleaching units were closed down by court order.

At first, this caused problems for the Tirupur Exporters Association, as it meant less money and jobs. However, by following the court order, Tiruppur became the first textile area in India to achieve zero liquid discharge in its factories. This shows a big step towards protecting the environment!
