Bhagat Singh Koshyari (born 17 June 1942) is an important Indian politician. He served as the 22nd Governor of Maharashtra from 2019 to 2023.
He is a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Before becoming Governor, he was the National Vice-President of the BJP. He also led the BJP in Uttarakhand as its state president.
Mr. Koshyari has held many important roles. He was the second Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2001 to 2002. Later, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. He has also been a member of both houses of the state legislature (MLC and MLA) and both houses of the national parliament (Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha).
As Governor of Maharashtra, some of his decisions led to discussions and legal reviews. He later stepped down from his role as Governor in 2023.

Early Life and Education
Bhagat Singh Koshyari was born on 17 June 1942. His parents were Gopal Singh Koshyari and Motima Devi. He was born in a village called Palanadhura Chetabgarh in the Bageshwar district. This area was part of British India at the time, but it is now in Uttarakhand, India.
He earned a master's degree in English. He studied at Almora College, which was then linked to Agra University. While at college, he was the general secretary of the students' union from 1961 to 1962. He also served on the Executive Council of Kumaon University for several terms.
Career as Teacher and Journalist
Mr. Koshyari had a successful career before politics. He worked as a lecturer at Raja Inter College in Etah district, Uttar Pradesh.
He also has a background in journalism. Since 1975, he has been the founder and managing editor of Parvat Piyush. This is a weekly newspaper published from Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. He has also written two books: Uttaranchal Pradesh Kyun? and Uttaranchal Sangharsh Evam Samadhan.
Political Journey
Bhagat Singh Koshyari joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was involved in the movement against the Indian Emergency (1975-1977). During this time, he was imprisoned from July 1975 to March 1977.
In May 1997, he became a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. This is the upper house of the legislature in Uttar Pradesh. In 2000, when the new state of Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand) was formed, he became a minister. He was in charge of Energy, Irrigation, Law, and Legislative Affairs.
In 2001, he became the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He served in this role until March 2002. After his party lost the assembly elections, he resigned as Chief Minister. However, he was elected as an MLA from the Kapkot area. He then became the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly until 2007.
In November 2008, he was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha. This is the upper house of India's Parliament. He served there until 2014. During this time, he was also appointed as a national vice-president of the BJP and the BJP chief in Uttarakhand.
In the 2014 Indian general election, he was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha. This is the lower house of India's Parliament. He represented the Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar area.
On 5 September 2019, he was appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra. In August 2020, he also took on the additional role of Governor of Goa. He resigned as Governor of Maharashtra on 12 February 2023. He had expressed his wish to retire after many years in public service.
Community Involvement
Mr. Koshyari has always been dedicated to education. He founded several schools in Uttarakhand, including:
- Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Pithoragarh
- Vivekanand Vidya Mandir Inter College, Pithoragarh
- Saraswati Vihar Higher Secondary School, Nainital
Even after many years in politics, he continues to support education. As the Governor of Maharashtra, he was also the Chancellor of the University of Mumbai. During his time as Governor, there were important changes in higher education in Maharashtra. This included the introduction of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). Several new state cluster universities were also set up, such as Dr. Homi Bhabha State University and HSNC University, Mumbai. He served as the Chancellor for these universities as well.
