Occupation Politician

Harish Singh Rawat (born on 27 April 1948) is an Indian politician. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2014 to 2017. A Chief Minister is like the main leader of a state government in India.

Rawat has been a Member of Parliament five times. This means he was elected to represent people in the country's main law-making body. He is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress party. He also worked as a minister in different government departments. For example, he was the Union Minister of Water Resources from 2012 to 2014.

Early Life and Education

Harish Rawat was born on 27 April 1948. His birthplace was Mohnari village in the Almora district of what is now Uttarakhand, India. His parents were Rajendra Singh Rawat and Devki Devi.

He went to school at GIC Chaunalia. Later, he studied at Lucknow University. He earned degrees in Arts and Law. He is married to Renuka Rawat, who is also a politician. She also studied Law at Lucknow University.

Starting His Political Journey

Harish Rawat began his political work in his village. For many years, he was involved with trade unions, which help workers. He was also a member of the Indian Youth Congress, a group for young people in the Congress party.

In 1980, he became a member of the Indian Parliament. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, which is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. He won elections three times in a row from the Almora area. From 1980, he led the Congress Volunteer Wing, called Congress Seva Dal. In 1981, he was part of the first group to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar after a war in 1962.

Important Roles in Politics

In 2000, Harish Rawat became the President of the Congress party in Uttarakhand. He held this important position for some years. In 2002, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha. This is the other house of the Indian Parliament, often called the upper house.

In the 2009 national election, he ran from a different area called Haridwar. He won this election with a large number of votes.

Serving as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand

In February 2014, Harish Rawat became the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He took over after the previous Chief Minister resigned. This happened because of criticism about how the government handled the floods in June 2013.

In July 2014, he won another election from the Dharchula assembly area. This helped him stay in his position. However, in March 2016, some politicians from his own party went against him. This made his government a minority. The central government then put the state under "President's Rule." This means the President of India took control of the state's government for a short time.

Rawat was able to get his position back on 11 May 2016. He won a "trust vote," which showed he had enough support from other politicians. But in the 2017 state elections, his party lost to the BJP. Harish Rawat also lost the two seats he ran for in that election.

Personal Life

Harish Rawat is married to Renuka Rawat. They have three children. He is also a member of the Congress Working Committee. This is a very important group within the Congress party.
