Trivendra Singh Rawat (born 20 December 1960) is an Indian politician. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2017 to 2021. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Rawat was part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from 1979 to 2002. He held important roles in the RSS in the Uttarakhand region. After Uttarakhand became a separate state in 2000, he became the state's organising secretary for the RSS.
He was first elected to the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly from Doiwala in 2002. He won his seat again in 2007 and became the State's Minister of Agriculture. In 2017, he won from Doiwala once more. After his party won the election, he was chosen as the Chief Minister. He resigned from this position on 9 March 2021.
Early Life and Political Start
Trivendra Singh Rawat was born on 20 December 1960. His birthplace was Khairasain village in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. He was the youngest of nine children in his family. He studied journalism and earned his master's degree from Birla Campus in Srinagar. This campus is part of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.
Rawat joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1979. By 1985, he became a pracharak (campaigner) for the RSS in the Dehradun area. Later, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP is a political party linked to the RSS. He became the BJP's organising secretary for the Uttarakhand region. He also worked with senior leader Lalji Tandon.
Rawat was very active in the movement to create the state of Uttarakhand. He was arrested several times during this time. After Uttarakhand became a state in 2000, Rawat was made the BJP president for the state.
Role as Chief Minister
Trivendra Singh Rawat became the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in 2017. He served in this important role for nearly four years. During his time as Chief Minister, he made many decisions for the state.
On 9 March 2021, Rawat resigned from his position. This decision followed meetings with BJP leaders in Delhi. The party decided it was time for a change in leadership.
Recent Political Career
Trivendra Singh Rawat did not run in the 2022 assembly election. However, he continued his political work.
In March 2024, the BJP announced that Rawat would be their candidate. He ran for the Haridwar constituency in the 2024 general elections. He won this election by a large number of votes. This means he is now a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament.
