Lalji Tandon (born April 12, 1935 – died July 21, 2020) was an important Indian politician. He served as the 18th Governor of Madhya Pradesh and the 28th Governor of Bihar. A Governor is like the head of a state in India, representing the President.
He was also a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1996 to 2014. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the national parliament. From 2003 to 2007, he was the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. This means he led the main political party that was not in power in that state. Lalji Tandon was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was also a close associate of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Early Life and Family
Lalji Tandon was born in Chowk village, Lucknow, which was part of British India at the time. His parents were Shivnarayan Tandon and Annpurna Devi. He belonged to a Hindu family.
He studied at Kalicharan Degree College. In 1958, he married Krishna Tandon. They had three sons together.
Political Journey
Lalji Tandon had a long and active career in Indian politics. He held many important positions over the years.
Early Political Roles
Tandon was a member of the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council) for two terms. This council is like an upper house of the state legislature. He served from 1978 to 1984 and again from 1990 to 1996. During his second term, he was the Leader of the House.
After that, he became a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly (MLA). He served three terms as an MLA from 1996 to 2009. From 2003 to 2007, he was the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
Serving as a Minister
Lalji Tandon also worked as a minister in the state government of Uttar Pradesh. He was the Urban Development minister. He served under different Chief Ministers, including Mayawati and Kalyan Singh. He also held the position of Minister of Power earlier in his career.
Member of Parliament
In May 2009, Lalji Tandon was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha. He won the election from the Lucknow area. This seat was previously held by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Tandon won by a large number of votes. He served as a Member of Parliament until 2014.
Becoming a Governor
Lalji Tandon was appointed as the Governor of Bihar on August 23, 2018. As Governor, he was praised for making improvements in the state's universities. He helped make academic activities run more smoothly.
On July 20, 2019, he became the 18th Governor of Madhya Pradesh. He took over this role from Anandiben Patel.
Other Contributions
In 2018, Lalji Tandon wrote a book titled Ankaha. The book was officially launched by the Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu.
Later Life and Legacy
Lalji Tandon passed away on July 21, 2020, at the age of 85. He died at Medanta Hospital in Lucknow. His son, Ashutosh Tandon, shared the news of his father's passing.
After his death, the Lalji Tandon Foundation was created in October 2020. This foundation aims to continue his work by providing public services. Gopal Tandon chairs this foundation.
To honor his memory, two roads in Uttar Pradesh were proposed to be named after him in July 2020. In December 2020, there was also a proposal to build a boxing hall named after him in Chowk Stadium, Lucknow.
Lalji Tandon also started the Chancellor’s award. This award encourages and supports the best colleges and universities. On his first death anniversary, a statue of Lalji Tandon was unveiled in Lucknow by Rajnath Singh.
