Kalyan Singh (born January 5, 1932 – died August 21, 2021) was an important Indian politician. He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh twice. He was also a Member of Parliament in India's national government. Many people saw him as a key leader in the movement to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Kalyan Singh's Early Life
Kalyan Singh was born in 1932 in a place called Aligarh district. This area is now part of Uttar Pradesh in India. His family belonged to the Lodhi community.
Joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
From a young age, Singh was a swayamsevak, which means a volunteer. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) while he was still in school. The RSS is a large volunteer organization in India.
His Family in Politics
Kalyan Singh's son, Rajveer Singh, is also a politician. His grandson, Sandeep Singh, also joined politics. Both of them are members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, just like Kalyan Singh.
Kalyan Singh's Political Journey
Kalyan Singh started his political career early. He became a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh when he was still a student.
Becoming a State Legislator
In 1967, he entered the Uttar Pradesh legislature. This is like the state parliament. He represented the Atrauli area. He won elections from this area nine more times. He was part of different parties like the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and the BJP.
First Term as Chief Minister
Kalyan Singh became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1991. As Chief Minister, he worked to make the government run well. He also strongly supported building a temple in Ayodhya. His government bought land near the Babri Masjid site. This was done to build facilities for visitors and allow religious activities.
However, after a major event at the Babri Masjid site in December 1992, Singh resigned from his position.
Second Term and Other Roles
He became Chief Minister again in 1997. But in 1999, he left the BJP and started his own political party.
Later, Singh rejoined the BJP in 2004. He was then elected as a Member of Parliament from Bulandshahar. This meant he was part of the national parliament. He left the BJP again in 2009. He ran as an independent candidate from Etah and won.
In 2014, he joined the BJP for a third time. He was then appointed as the Governor of Rajasthan. A Governor is like the head of a state, representing the President.
He served as Governor for five years. After his term ended in 2019, he returned to active politics.
Illness and Passing Away
Kalyan Singh became ill on July 3, 2021. He had problems with breathing and felt sick. He was taken to a hospital.
He passed away on August 21, 2021, at the age of 89. He was suffering from an infection and organ failure. After his death, he was given the Padma Vibhushan award. This is India's second-highest award for civilians.
