Early Life and Education
Venkaiah Naidu was born in Chavatapalem village in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. He went to Zilla Parshad High School in Bucchireddy Palem. He then studied politics at V. R. College, Nellore. Later, he earned a law degree from Andhra University College of Law in Visakhapatnam.
During his college days, he was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsev Sangh (a volunteer organization) and joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (a student group). He was elected as the president of the students' union at Andhra University. He became well-known for his role in the 1972 Jai Andhra movement in 1972. This movement was a protest for a separate Andhra state.
In 1974, he became a leader for a student group called Jai Prakash Narayan Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti. He protested against the "Emergency" period in India, a time when special rules were in place. Because of his protests, he was put in prison.
Journey in Politics
Venkaiah Naidu was known as a strong speaker who supported farmers and worked for the development of less-developed areas. His speaking skills and political work helped him a lot. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Andhra Pradesh twice, in 1978 and 1983. He became one of the most popular leaders of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh.
After holding different positions in the BJP, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha (one of India's two main parliamentary houses) from Karnataka in 1998. He was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha two more times, in 2004 and 2010. From 1996 to 2000, he was the party's spokesperson. He was good at explaining things in a clear and interesting way. Unlike many politicians from South India, he learned Hindi well and gave speeches in North India.
When the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the elections in 1999, he became the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development. This was under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He worked hard to bring changes in rural development. Many new programs were started during this time, like the 'Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana' (a program to build rural roads).
Leading the BJP Party
Venkaiah Naidu became the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2003. He was chosen without opposition for a full three-year term in January 2004. After the BJP-led NDA lost the 2004 elections, he stepped down from his role in October 2004. L. K. Advani took over from him. However, Naidu remained an important leader and campaigner for the BJP. He also spoke about giving "Special Status to Andhra Pradesh" in the Rajya Sabha in 2014.
Role as Urban Affairs Minister
After the BJP won the 2014 general elections, he became the Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs on May 26, 2014.
Mr. Naidu is also involved with the Swarna Bharat Trust. This is a social service organization he started in Nellore. The trust runs a school for children who are poor, orphaned, or have special needs. It also offers training programs to help people, especially women and young people, find jobs. In May 2016, he was again chosen by the BJP to be a member of the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.
Serving as Vice President (2017–2022)

On July 5, 2016, he also became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. A year later, he resigned from these positions to run for the 2017 Indian vice presidential election. He won the election and became India's 13th Vice President. He received 516 votes, while his opponent, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, received 244 votes.
When his term ended, Mr. Naidu decided to move back to Hyderabad with his family. He said he would continue to serve the nation. Jagdeep Dhankhar became the next Vice President on August 11, 2022.
