Early Life and Education
Venkaiah Naidu was born on 1 July 1949 in Chavatapalem village, Andhra Pradesh. His parents were Rangaiah Naidu and Ramanamma. He went to Zilla Parshad High School in Bucchireddy Palem.
He studied politics and diplomatic studies at V. R. College, Nellore. Later, he earned a law degree from Andhra University College of Law. During his college days, he was part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and joined the ABVP. He was elected as the president of the students' union at Andhra University.
Student Activism
Venkaiah Naidu became well-known for his role in the Jai Andhra Movement in 1972. This movement was a protest for a separate Andhra state. He actively participated in the protests in Nellore.
In 1974, he became a leader of the Jayaprakash Narayan Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti in Andhra Pradesh. He protested against the Emergency rule in India and was even imprisoned for it. From 1977 to 1980, he led the youth wing of the Janata Party in Andhra Pradesh.
Political Journey
Venkaiah Naidu was known for his strong speaking skills. He often spoke up for farmers and the development of less advanced areas. His ability to speak well helped him in his political career.
He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Andhra Pradesh twice. This was for the Udaygiri constituency in Nellore district, in 1978 and 1983. He became one of the most popular leaders of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh.
National Roles
After holding various positions in the BJP at the state level, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of India's Parliament) from Karnataka in 1998. He was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004 and 2010.
From 1996 to 2000, he served as the party's spokesperson. He was known for his unique way of speaking. Unlike many politicians from southern India, he learned Hindi well and gave speeches in northern India.
When the NDA won the 1999 elections, he became the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development. He worked hard to bring changes in rural development. He introduced many schemes, like the 'Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana', which helped build roads in villages.
Leading the BJP
Naidu became the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2003. He was elected without opposition for a full three-year term in January 2004. After the BJP-led NDA lost the 2004 general elections, he stepped down from his post in October 2004. However, he remained a senior leader and an important campaigner for the BJP.
Minister of Urban Affairs
After the BJP won the 2014 general elections, he became the Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs on 26 May 2014.
He is also involved with the Swarna Bharat Trust, a social service group he founded in Nellore. This trust runs a school for children who are poor, orphaned, or have special needs. It also offers training programs to help people, especially women and youth, find jobs or start their own businesses. In 2016, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.
Vice Presidency (2017–2022)

In July 2016, he also became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. A year later, he resigned from his ministerial roles to run for the 2017 vice presidential election. He won the election and became India's 13th Vice President. He received 516 votes, while his opponent, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, received 244 votes.
He took office as the Vice President of India and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on 11 August 2017. His term ended on 11 August 2022. After his term, he moved back to Hyderabad with his family. Jagdeep Dhankhar succeeded him as Vice President.
