Kashiram Rana (born April 7, 1938 – died August 31, 2012) was an important Indian politician. He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is a major political party in India.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha (which is like the main parliament of India) many times. He represented the Surat area in Gujarat state. He served as a government minister twice, looking after the department of textiles. This was during the time when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of India. Kashiram Rana passed away in 2012. Later in his career, he also helped form a new political party called the Gujarat Parivartan Party.
About Kashiram Rana
Kashiram Rana was born in Surat, Gujarat, on April 7, 1938. His father's name was Shri Chhabildas, and his mother's name was Smt. Kashiben. He was married to Late Smt. Pushpa. They had two sons and four daughters.
He studied at South Gujarat University in Surat. He earned degrees in Commerce (B.Com.) and Law (LL.B.). After his studies, he worked as a lawyer and was also very active in social work.
Political Journey
Kashiram Rana had a long and active career in politics. He held several important positions throughout his life.
- He started his political journey as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from 1975 to 1980. This is like being a representative in the state government.
- He also served as the Mayor of Surat City's Municipal Corporation twice, in 1983-84 and again in 1987. The Mayor is the head of the city government.
- He was the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat for several years, from 1985-87 and again from 1993-96.
- In 1989, he was first elected to the Lok Sabha from the Surat constituency. He was re-elected five more times, serving a total of six terms in the Lok Sabha. This means he was a Member of Parliament for a long time, representing the people of Surat.
- From 1998 to 2003, he served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Textiles. This meant he was in charge of policies related to the textile industry across India.
- From 2003 to 2004, he became the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development. In this role, he worked on programs to help develop villages and rural areas in India.
