Satya Pal Malik (born 24 July 1946 – died 5 August 2025) was an important Indian politician. He served as the governor of five different states in India. These states included Bihar, Odisha, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, and Meghalaya.
Mr. Malik began his political journey in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1977. He later represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, which is one of India's two houses of Parliament. He was also a member of the Lok Sabha, the other house of Parliament, representing the Aligarh area. He became a governor in 2017, starting with Bihar. He then served as governor for Jammu and Kashmir during a time of significant changes for the region. Later, he was the governor of Goa and finally Meghalaya until 2022.

Early Life and Education
Satya Pal Malik was born on 24 July 1946 in a village called Hisawada. This village was in the Meerut district of what was then British India. Today, this area is part of the Bagpat district in Uttar Pradesh, India.
He studied at Meerut University, where he earned degrees in Science and Law. His journey into politics began early. In 1968–69, he was elected as the president of the students' union at his university. Mr. Malik was married to Iqbal Malik. He passed away on 5 August 2025, at the age of 79, after being ill for some time.
Political Journey
Mr. Satya Pal Malik's political career started when he was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He represented the Baghpat area. He won this election as a member of the Bharatiya Kranti Dal party. Later, he joined the Bharatiya Lok Dal party and became its general secretary.
Roles in National Parliament
He then moved to national politics. From 1980 to 1989, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha. This is also known as the Council of States, one of the two houses of India's Parliament. He represented the state of Uttar Pradesh there.
From 1989 to 1991, he was a member of the Lok Sabha, the House of the People. He represented the Aligarh area as a member of the Janata Dal party. In 2012, he was appointed as a National Vice-President of the BJP.
Serving as Governor
A Governor is a leader who represents the President of India in a state. They play an important role in the state's administration. Satya Pal Malik served as the Governor for five different Indian states:
- Governor of Bihar: From 30 September 2017 to 21 August 2018.
- Governor of Odisha: He also held an additional charge as Governor of Odisha from 21 March 2018 to 28 August 2018.
- Governor of Jammu and Kashmir: From 23 August 2018 to 30 October 2019.
- Governor of Goa: From 3 November 2019 to 18 August 2020.
- Governor of Meghalaya: From 18 August 2020 to 3 October 2022.
