Brigadier (Dr.) B.D. Mishra was born on July 20, 1939. He is a retired officer from the Indian Army. He has held important positions in the government. These include being the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. He also served as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Governor of Meghalaya, and Governor of Mizoram.

Military Career and Achievements
Joining the Army
B.D. Mishra started his career as an infantry officer in the Indian Army on December 17, 1961. He served his country for many years. He retired from the army on July 31, 1995.
Heroic Rescue Mission
One of his most notable achievements happened on April 24, 1993. Mishra was the commander of a special team called the NSG (Black Cat Commandos). This team was tasked with rescuing people from a hijacked Indian Airlines plane.
The rescue operation took place at Raja Sansi Airfield in Amritsar. His team successfully rescued all 124 passengers and crew members. They managed to do this without anyone getting hurt or the plane being damaged. The hijackers were stopped during the operation. For his brave actions, Mishra received special appreciation from the Prime Minister.
Service in Wars and Operations
Mishra took part in many important wars and operations for India. He showed great courage and leadership in these roles.
- 1962: He fought against the Chinese attack on India.
- 1963–1964: He was involved in operations against Naga insurgents in Nagaland.
- 1965: He fought against Pakistan in the Sialkot Sector.
- 1971: He participated in the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan.
- 1979-1981: He commanded a battalion against Pakistan on the LoC in the Poonch Sector.
- 1987-1988: He was a leading commander of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Jaffna, Vavunia, and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. He fought against the LTTE.
- 1990-1995: He served as the NSG Force Commander. In this role, he worked against terrorists in J&K and Punjab.
- After Retirement: Even after retiring, he volunteered to serve in the Kargil War.
He has received special recognition for his brave actions in fighting terrorists.
Education and Learning
B.D. Mishra is a highly educated person. He has several university degrees.
- He earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree from Allahabad University.
- He also has a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree from Madras University.
- He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Jiwaji University, Gwalior.
- He also holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from University of Delhi.
Mishra also shared his knowledge by teaching. He taught at the College of Combat at Mhow and the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington. He taught postgraduate and graduate-level courses for five years.
