Brigadier (Dr.) Bal Dutt Mishra is a brave retired officer from the Indian Army. He was born on July 20, 1939. Today, he serves as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. This is an important role in governing the region.

Before this, he was the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. He also served as the Governor of Meghalaya and Governor of Mizoram. These are all key positions in the Indian government.

His Military Career

Bal Dutt Mishra joined the Indian Army as an infantry officer on December 17, 1961. He served his country for many years. He retired from the army on July 31, 1995.

A Heroic Rescue Mission

One of his most famous missions was in 1993. Mishra led a special team called the NSG (also known as Black Cat Commandos). Their job was to rescue people from a hijacked Indian Airlines plane.

The plane was at Raja Sansi Airfield in Amritsar. On April 24, 1993, his team successfully rescued all 124 passengers and crew members. They did this without anyone getting hurt. Mishra received special praise from the Prime Minister for his excellent work.

Serving India in Conflicts

Mishra played a key role in many important events for India. He helped protect the country in various wars and operations:

  • He fought against the Chinese attack on India in 1962.
  • He worked against Naga insurgents in Nagaland from 1963 to 1964.
  • He fought against Pakistan in the Sialkot Sector in 1965.
  • He was part of the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971.
  • From 1979 to 1981, he commanded a battalion on the LoC in the Poonch Sector.
  • He led a brigade of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka from 1987 to 1988. He worked in Jaffna, Vavunia, and Trincomalee against the LTTE.
  • As an NSG Force Commander, he worked against terrorists in J&K and Punjab from 1990 to 1995.
  • Even after retiring, he volunteered to serve in the Kargil War.

He has been honored for his brave actions in fighting terrorism.

His Education

Bal Dutt Mishra is also highly educated. He earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree from Allahabad University. He also has a Master of Science (M.Sc) from Madras University. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Jiwaji University, Gwalior.

He taught at the College of Combat at Mhow and the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington. He also holds a law degree (LL.B.) from the University of Delhi.
