History of the Governor's Role
Meghalaya became a separate state on January 21, 1972. This is when the job of the Governor of Meghalaya officially began.
The first person to hold this position was Braj Kumar Nehru. He was already the Governor of Assam. So, he took on the extra responsibility of being Meghalaya's Governor too. This continued until September 1973.
For many years, the Governor of Assam also looked after Meghalaya. This meant one person had two important jobs! In July 1989, Meghalaya got its first full-time Governor, A. A. Rahim. Since then, most Governors have been full-time, meaning their main job was just for Meghalaya.
Sometimes, if a Governor's term ends or they leave, another state's Governor might temporarily take on the role for Meghalaya. This happened a few times, like when the Governor of Manipur or West Bengal helped out for a short period.
