Tathagata Roy (born 14 September 1945) is an Indian politician. He served as the Governor of Tripura from 2015 to 2018. Later, he was the Governor of Meghalaya from 2018 to 2020.
Before becoming a Governor, he was the president of the West Bengal state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was also a member of the BJP National Executive. Roy is an engineer by training. He was a professor of construction engineering and helped start the department at Jadavpur University.

Early Life and Education
Tathagata Roy was born on 14 September 1945 in Calcutta, which was then part of British India. His parents were Debesh Chandra Roy and Anila Roy. He was a very good student from a young age.
He ranked 6th in the Higher secondary exam in West Bengal. He also received a special scholarship for science talent. Roy studied Civil Engineering at Bengal Engineering College Sibpur. This college is now known as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur.
Career as an Engineer
After his engineering studies, Roy joined the Indian Railways Service of Engineers. He worked as a General Manager at RITES, which is a transport consultancy company. He was also the Chief Engineer for Design of Metro Railways in Calcutta.
He also earned a Law Degree from Calcutta University. In 1990, Roy decided to retire early from the Railways. He then became a professor at Jadavpur University. He helped create and lead the Department of Construction Engineering there.
Roy was honored as an 'Eminent Engineering Personality' in 2015. He also received an award from his former college, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, in 2016. He was given honorary degrees from two universities in 2016.
Political Journey
Tathagata Roy became interested in politics and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1986. After leaving his government job, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1990.
He became the president of the BJP's West Bengal unit in 2002. He held this position until 2006. Roy ran for election to the Lok Sabha, which is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament, in 2009 and 2014. He did not win these elections.
Serving as Governor
A Governor is a leader appointed by the President of India to oversee a state. They act as the head of the state, similar to a president for a country.
Governor of Tripura
Tathagata Roy was appointed as the 16th Governor of Tripura on 20 May 2015. He served in this important role for over three years, until 25 August 2018.
Governor of Meghalaya
On 27 August 2018, Roy was given an additional responsibility. He became the acting Governor of Meghalaya. This happened after the previous Governor's term ended.
He served in both roles for a while. Later, he was officially appointed as the full-time 19th Governor of Meghalaya. He continued in this position until 18 August 2020. After completing his five-year term as a Governor, he handed over the charge to Satya Pal Malik.
Governor of Arunachal Pradesh (Additional Charge)
For a short time, from July to August 2016, Roy also had extra duties as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. During this period, he managed a change in the state's leadership. He oversaw the process after a Supreme Court decision and swore in Pema Khandu as the new Chief Minister.
Family Life
Tathagata Roy is the older brother of Saugata Roy. Saugata Roy is also a politician and a Member of Parliament for the All India Trinamool Congress party.
Tathagata Roy is married to Anuradha. She used to teach English at B.K.C. College in Kolkata. They have two daughters, Malini and Madhura. Both of their daughters are married and live in the United States.
