Tathagata Roy, born on September 14, 1945, is an Indian politician. He served as the Governor of Tripura from 2015 to 2018. Later, he became the Governor of Meghalaya from August 2018 until August 2020. Before becoming a governor, he was a key leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal. He also had a career as an engineer and a professor.
Roy briefly took on extra duties as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh in 2016. During this time, he helped manage a change in the state's leadership. He is a trained engineer and was a professor at Jadavpur University.

Early Life and Education
Tathagata Roy was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, on September 14, 1945. His parents were Debesh Chandra Roy and Anila Roy. He was a very good student from a young age.
He attended St. Lawrence High School, Kolkata. He was one of the top students in the Higher Secondary examination. He also received a special scholarship for science talent. Roy studied Civil Engineering at Bengal Engineering College Sibpur. This college is now known as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. He also earned a Law Degree from the University of Calcutta.
Professional Career
After finishing his engineering studies, Roy joined the Indian Railways. He worked there as an engineer for many years. He held important positions like General Manager at RITES. He was also the Chief Engineer for design of the Metro Railways in Calcutta.
In 1990, Roy decided to retire early from the Railways. He then started a new career in teaching. He joined Jadavpur University as a professor. He helped start and lead the Department of Construction Engineering there. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Governors for TTTI Calcutta. Roy is a member of the Institution of Engineers. He also worked as an arbitrator for engineering contracts.
Awards and Recognition
Tathagata Roy has received several honors for his work. In 2015, he was recognized as an 'Eminent Engineering Personality'. This award was given by the Institution of Engineers (India). He also received a special award from his old college, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur.
In 2016, he was given honorary degrees. He received a Doctor of Letters from Shri Jagdishprasad Jhabarmull Tibrewala University. He also got a Doctor of Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Agartala.
Political Journey
Tathagata Roy became interested in politics and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1986. After leaving government service, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1990.
He became the president of the BJP's West Bengal state unit in 2002. He held this position until 2006. Roy also ran for election to the Lok Sabha (India's lower house of Parliament) in 2009 and 2014. While he did not win these elections, he gained significant support.
Serving as Governor
In 2015, Roy was appointed as the Governor of Tripura. He served in this role until 2018. In August 2018, he was transferred and became the Governor of Meghalaya. He served in Meghalaya until August 2020. During his time as governor, he completed a five-year term in these important positions.
Family Life
Tathagata Roy is the elder brother of Saugata Roy. Saugata Roy is also a politician and a Member of Parliament. Tathagata Roy is married to Anuradha, who used to teach English. They have two daughters, Malini and Madhura. Both of their daughters are married and live in the United States.
