Ravindra Narayana Ravi (born 3 April 1952) is an Indian politician and a former government official. He currently serves as the Governor of Tamil Nadu. Before this, he was the Governor of Nagaland from August 2019 to September 2021. He also briefly served as the Governor of Meghalaya.
His time as Governor of Tamil Nadu has involved some disagreements. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin, has sometimes said that Governor Ravi was slow to approve new laws. This led the state assembly to ask the Indian government to set clear time limits for governors to sign bills. India's highest court later made rules about these time limits.

Early Life and Career
Ravi was born in Patna, Bihar. He finished his master's degree in physics in 1974. After working briefly in journalism, he joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1976. He worked in the state of Kerala for over ten years.
While working for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Ravi helped fight against organized crime groups. Later, in the Intelligence Bureau, he worked in areas with conflict, like Jammu and Kashmir and the North East. He retired from government service in 2012 and then wrote articles for national newspapers.
Political Roles
In 2014, Ravi became the Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee. This committee helps gather and analyze important information for the government. On 5 October 2018, he was appointed Deputy National Security Advisor of India. This role involves advising on national safety matters.
From 2014 to 2021, he also worked as a special representative for peace talks between the NSCN-IM group and the Government of India.
Governor of Nagaland
On 20 July 2019, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, appointed Ravi as the Governor of Nagaland. During his time there, the Nagaland Peace Accord was signed in August 2015. This agreement helped bring peace to the region.
However, Governor Ravi had some disagreements with the NSCN-IM group in 2020. They felt he had misunderstood a peace agreement. After he was moved to Tamil Nadu, some people in Nagaland, including journalists, said they were not happy with how he had worked. They felt he had interfered too much in the state government's work.
Governor of Tamil Nadu
On 9 September 2021, R. N. Ravi was appointed the Governor of Tamil Nadu by President Ram Nath Kovind. He officially took office on 18 September 2021. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin, welcomed him. However, some political parties questioned his appointment.
In April 2022, India's highest court looked into Governor Ravi's decision to send a request for release from a prisoner to the President. The court said this action could affect the balance of power between the state and central governments.
Governor Ravi also faced criticism for not approving many bills passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly. From September 2021 to April 2022, he did not approve 19 bills, including one about a medical entrance exam called NEET. By May 2022, 21 bills were still waiting for his approval.
In January 2023, Governor Ravi suggested that "Tamilagam" might be a better name for Tamil Nadu. He also commented on the state's political parties. These remarks caused a lot of discussion. Many political parties and students protested against his comments.
On 9 January 2023, during his speech to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Governor Ravi left out parts of the speech prepared by the state government. These parts included words about women empowerment, secularism, and leaders like B. R. Ambedkar. Usually, the Governor reads the speech exactly as prepared. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin then asked the assembly to record only the government's original speech. Governor Ravi walked out of the assembly during the Chief Minister's speech, before the national anthem was played.
Again, on 12 February 2024, Governor Ravi did not read the full speech prepared by the state government. He left the assembly before the national anthem was played. Later, he explained that he could not read the speech because he disagreed with some parts of it.
