Prof. Jagdish Mukhi (born 1 December 1942) is an Indian politician. He has held important roles in the government. From 2017 to 2023, he served as the 28th Governor of Assam. He also took on extra duties as the Governor of Nagaland from 2021 to 2023 and the Governor of Mizoram in 2019.
Before these roles, Mukhi was the 13th Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 2016 to 2017. He was also a minister in the Government of Delhi. There, he managed areas like finance, planning, and higher education. He represented the Janakpuri Assembly constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly for many years, from 1993 to 2015. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Jagdish Mukhi's Early Life and Family
Jagdish Mukhi was born on 1 December 1942 in a place called Dajal. This area was part of British India at the time. When he was only four years old, his family moved to Sohna. This move happened during a big event called the Partition of India.
He studied hard and earned a degree in Commerce (B.Com.) in 1965. Later, he got a Master's degree (M.Com.) from the University of Delhi in 1967. Before he became a politician, he was a professor at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College in Delhi. He also earned a PhD in finance in 1995.
In 1970, he married Prem Grover. His wife, Prem Mukhi, works to help women. They have a son named Atul and a daughter named Latika.
Jagdish Mukhi's Political Journey
Jagdish Mukhi became interested in public service from a young age. In 1958, he attended a training camp with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This group helps people learn about serving their community. He later became a secretary for the RSS in his district. In 1975, he joined protests against a period called "The Emergency" in India.
In 1973, he moved to Janakpuri, Delhi. There, he became a leader in the new Janata Party in 1977. His first success in elections was in 1980. He won a special election for the advisory Delhi Metropolitan Council.
Key Roles and Achievements
Mukhi held many important positions during his career.
- As the Minister of Higher Education, he helped start the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. This university was set up very quickly, in just eight months.
- He was recognized as the best planning minister in the country. This award was given to him by Pranab Mukherjee, who was the Union planning minister at the time.
- He also received the "best MLA" award twice in the Delhi Assembly. An MLA is a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
Mukhi represented the Janak Puri area for a long time. He won seven elections in a row for the same area, starting in 1980. He continued to serve until 2015. In that year, he lost the election to Mr. Rajesh Rishi.
He worked in many different roles within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was a president, general secretary, and in charge of BJP affairs in different states like Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana.
In August 2016, he became the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Then, in September 2017, he became the Governor of Assam.
