Prof. Jagdish Mukhi (born 1 December 1942) is an Indian politician. He served as the Governor of Assam from 2017 to 2023. He also held additional roles as Governor of Nagaland and Mizoram for certain periods. Before becoming a Governor, he was the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Early Life and Education
Jagdish Mukhi was born on 1 December 1942 in a place called Dajal, which is now in Pakistan. When he was four years old, his family moved to Sohna during the Partition of India.
He studied hard and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1965. Later, he completed his Master of Commerce degree from the University of Delhi in 1967. Before entering politics, he worked as a professor at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College in Delhi. In 1995, he received a PhD in finance from Kurukshetra University.
In 1970, he married Prem Grover. She is now known as Prem Mukhi and works to help women through an organization called Mahila Jagriti Sangh. They have a son named Atul and a daughter named Latika.
Political Journey
Jagdish Mukhi became interested in public service from a young age. He joined a training camp of the RSS in 1958. He later became a secretary for the RSS in Alwar District in 1964. In 1975, he actively campaigned with the Delhi RSS.
In 1973, he moved to Janakpuri, Delhi. He became the General Secretary of the Janakpuri branch of the Janata Party in 1977. His first success in an election was in 1980 for the Delhi Metropolitan Council.
He served as the Minister of Higher Education in Delhi. During this time, he helped establish Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University very quickly. He was recognized as the best planning minister in the country by Pranab Mukherjee, who was the Union planning minister then. He also received the best MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) award twice in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha.
Mukhi represented the Janakpuri area in the Delhi Legislative Assembly for many years, winning seven elections in a row from 1980 until 2015. He has worked in various important roles within the BJP party.
In August 2016, he became the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Then, in September 2017, he was appointed Governor of Assam, a role he held until 2023.
