The Governor of Assam is a very important person in the Indian state of Assam. Think of them as the official head of the state, even though the Chief Minister usually handles the day-to-day running of the government. The Governor is chosen by the President of India. The person currently holding this position is Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

What the Governor Does

The Governor has several key jobs and responsibilities. They help make sure the state runs smoothly and according to the rules.

Executive Powers

These powers are about managing the state. The Governor helps with:

  • Making important decisions about how the state is run.
  • Appointing people to important jobs.
  • Removing people from certain positions if needed.

Legislative Powers

These powers are about making laws. The Governor plays a part in:

  • The lawmaking process in the state.
  • Working with the state's lawmaking body, like the Vidhan Sabha (State Assembly).

Special Powers

The Governor also has some special powers they can use when they need to make decisions on their own, based on what they think is best for the state.

Governors of Assam Through History

Assam has had many Governors over the years, both before and after India became independent in 1947.

Governors Before Independence (1912–1947)

Before India gained independence, Assam was a province under British rule. The Governors during this time were appointed by the British government. Here are some of the people who held this important role:

Governors After Independence (1947–Present)

After India became independent on August 15, 1947, the role of the Governor continued, but now they were appointed by the President of India. This list shows the Governors who have served since then. Sometimes, a Governor might be "acting" or have "additional charge" if the main Governor is away or the position is temporarily empty.

Key to the list
  • Died in office: The Governor passed away while still in their role.
  • Transferred: The Governor was moved to a different state.
  • Resigned/removed: The Governor left their position.
  • Acting/Additional Charge: This means someone was temporarily filling the role.
