Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi was born on July 4, 1954. He is a very important person in India. He served as an Admiral in the Indian Navy. He was also the 21st Chief of Naval Staff for India's Navy. This is the highest position in the Navy.

Currently, he is the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He also helps lead the Islands Development Agency (IDA). Admiral Joshi is known for his work in anti-submarine warfare. This means he specialized in finding and fighting enemy submarines.

In May 2020, Admiral Joshi became a supporter of the Uttarakhand War Memorial. He has also given his future awards money to the trust. This helps honor brave people from Uttarakhand who served the nation.

Early Life and Education

Devendra Kumar Joshi was born on July 4, 1954. His father, Hira Ballabh Joshi, worked for the Indian Forest Service. His mother was Hansa Joshi. Young Devendra went to different schools as his father moved for work.

Later, he studied at Hansraj College in Delhi. In January 1972, he was chosen to join the Indian Navy. He officially became an officer in 1974.

Admiral Joshi once shared why he joined the Navy. He said he was drawn to the sea and the unknown. His family had not been in the military for many generations. But they fully supported his choice.

Admiral Joshi started his Navy career on April 1, 1974. He graduated from the Indian Naval Academy. He also studied at important military colleges. These include the Naval War College in the USA and the National Defence College in New Delhi.

Becoming Chief of Naval Staff

On August 31, 2012, Admiral Joshi became the 21st Chief of Naval Staff. This is the top leader of the Indian Navy.

Admiral Joshi was known as a strict and fair leader. He always expected high standards from his team. On February 26, 2014, he resigned from his position. He took responsibility after some accidents happened on naval ships. This showed his strong sense of duty.

Leading Island Development

Admiral Joshi plays a key role in developing India's islands. He is the Vice-Chairman of the Islands Development Agency (IDA). This agency was created in 2017. Its goal is to help Indian islands grow and improve.

The IDA works to create plans for the islands. It makes sure that the unique nature of each island is protected. The agency has met several times to review progress. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi even led one of these meetings.

The government is working hard to develop these islands. For example, a new airport terminal was opened in Port Blair. This helps more tourists visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It can now handle many more passengers each year.
