Ganga Prasad Chaurasia is an Indian politician who has served as the Governor of the states of Sikkim and Meghalaya. A Governor is like the head of a state, representing the President of India.
He was also a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, which is a part of the state's parliament. He was the leader of the opposition during the time the RJD party was in power. Later, he became the leader of the Bihar Legislative Council when the NDA ruled Bihar.
Ganga Prasad joined the Jan Sangh political party early in his life and has followed its ideas ever since. He is also a strong supporter of Arya Samaj, a movement that promotes certain Hindu beliefs. He was even the head of the Arya Samaj unit in Bihar. People in politics often call him 'Ganga Babu'.

Early Life and Family Background
Ganga Prasad Chaurasia was born on July 8, 1939, into a business family in Khajpura, Patna, which was then part of British India. His father, Mundar Sah, was a very successful businessman. He worked with people from eastern India and Bangladesh for his business.
Mr. Sah was also very active in his community. He served as the chief of his village, Khajpura, for two terms. This area is now part of the Patna Municipal Corporation. Ganga Prasad's father understood how important politics was in Bihar. He encouraged his son to join politics and follow the ideas of the Jan Sangh party.
Ganga Prasad was also the chairman of an organization in Bihar called Dadhichi Dehdaan Samiti. This group encourages people to donate their organs to help others.
His Children's Paths
Ganga Prasad has five children. His oldest son, Arun Kumar, is a businessman. His second son, Sanjeev Chaurasiya, is a politician and a member of the BJP party. He represents the Digha area in Patna district.
His third son, Deepak Chaurasia, was a local councilor for three terms. When his ward became reserved for women, Deepak's wife, Madhu Chaurasia, ran for the position and was elected. Ganga Prasad's son-in-law, Umesh Kumar, is a senior police officer in Karnataka. His daughter, Suruchi Kumari, is a businesswoman, and his youngest son works in the IT field.

Becoming a Legislator
In 1994, Ganga Prasad was elected to the Legislative Council of Bihar. He served as a member of this council for 18 years.
Serving as Governor
On September 30, 2017, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, appointed Ganga Prasad as the new Governor of Meghalaya.
Then, on August 26, 2018, he took an oath to become the 16th Governor of Sikkim. He replaced Shriniwas Dadasaheb Patil in this important role. He served as Governor of Sikkim until February 12, 2023.
Early Steps in Politics
- 1966: Inspired by leaders like Syama Prasad Mukherjee and Deendayal Upadhyaya, he joined the Jan Sangh political party.
- 1967: He ran for the assembly election from the Danapur area in Bihar but did not win.
- 1968: He became the General Secretary of the Jan Sangh party for the Patna district.
- 1969: Mr. Prasad tried again to win the assembly election from Danapur but was not successful.
- 1972: He was appointed General Secretary of the Bihar Pradesh Badhai Mahasabha.
- 1974: During protests against rising prices before a period called the Emergency, he was arrested. His vehicles were taken away.
- 1975: An arrest warrant was issued for him during the Emergency, and he went into hiding. However, after his property was seized, he had to surrender. He was later released on parole because of a flood at that time. During the Emergency, his house, 'Arya Bhawan', became a secret meeting and hiding place for leaders of the Jan Sangh and RSS groups.
- 1977: After the Emergency ended, the first training camp for the RSS was held in Patna. Many national leaders of the RSS stayed at his home, 'Arya Bhawan'. Even BP Koirala visited his home to meet Madhukar Dattatraya Deoras, a top RSS leader.
- 1979: The Bihar Vaishya Parishad organized an event that was opened by Karpoori Thakur. Ganga Prasad was the welcoming chief for this ceremony.
- 1980: When the BJP party was formed, he became the treasurer for the BJP in Bihar. He is considered one of the very first members of the BJP in Bihar.
- 1985: He ran for election again from the Danapur area as a BJP candidate but did not win. During this election campaign, many leaders visited Danapur.
