Girish Chandra Murmu (born 21 November 1959) is a respected retired IAS officer. An IAS officer is a high-ranking government official in India. He served as the 14th Comptroller and Auditor General of India from 2020 to 2024. This role involves checking how the government spends money. He was also the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, a special administrative position, until August 2020. Mr. Murmu has also worked as an external auditor for important international groups like the United Nations Panel of External Auditors and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Early Life and Education
Girish Chandra Murmu was born on 21 November 1959. His birthplace was Betnoti village in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, India. He grew up in a Santal family.
For his education, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Political Science. He received this degree from Utkal University. He also studied at the University of Birmingham, where he completed an MBA degree. He is the oldest of eight children in his family.
Career Highlights
Girish Chandra Murmu has held many important positions in the Indian government. In 2001, he became the Relief Commissioner in Gujarat. Later, he served as Commissioner for Mines and Minerals. He also managed the Gujarat Maritime Board.
His career advanced significantly in 2004. He became the joint secretary of the Gujarat Home Department. He was known as a trusted aide to Narendra Modi during his time as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. When Mr. Modi became Prime Minister, he called Mr. Murmu to work in the finance ministry in New Delhi.
On 31 October 2019, Mr. Murmu took on a new and historic role. He became the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. This happened after the region became a new Union Territory. He was sworn into office by Chief Justice Gita Mittal. He served in this role until 5 August 2020.
After that, on 8 August 2020, he was appointed as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. He held this significant position until 20 November 2024.
