Keshari Nath Tripathi (born 10 November 1934, died 8 January 2023) was an important Indian politician. He served as the Governor of West Bengal for five years, from 2014 to 2019. He also briefly held the role of governor in other states like Bihar, Meghalaya, and Mizoram. Mr. Tripathi was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, a major political party in India. He was also the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly three times, which is like being the leader of the state's law-making body.

About Keshari Nath Tripathi
Keshari Nath Tripathi was born in Allahabad on 10 November 1934. His parents were Harish Chandra Tripathi and Shiva Devi. He passed away in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on 8 January 2023, at the age of 88.
His Political Journey
Keshari Nath Tripathi had a long and active career in politics. He was elected as a member of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly six times. This assembly is where laws are made for the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Early Political Roles
From 1977 to 1980, he represented the Jhusi area. Later, he won five elections in a row for the Allahabad South area, serving from 1989 to 2007. Between 1977 and 1979, he was a cabinet minister for institutional finance and sales tax in Uttar Pradesh. This meant he was in charge of important financial matters for the state government.
Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party
In April 1980, when the Bharatiya Janata Party was first formed, Mr. Tripathi became a member. He quickly became a key figure in the party.
Serving as Speaker
Mr. Tripathi served as the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly three times. These terms were from 1991 to 1993, 1997 to 2002, and again from May 2002 to March 2004. The Speaker is like the referee of the assembly, making sure debates are fair and rules are followed.
Becoming a Governor
On 14 July 2014, Keshari Nath Tripathi was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal. He officially took office on 24 July. A governor is the head of a state in India, representing the President.
He also took on extra duties as governor for other states:
- He was the Governor of Bihar twice, from November 2014 to August 2015, and again from June 2017 to September 2017.
- He served as the Governor of Meghalaya from January 2015 to May 2015.
- He was the Governor of Mizoram from April 2015 to May 2015.
Other Achievements
Beyond politics, Keshari Nath Tripathi was also a successful lawyer, working as a senior advocate at the Allahabad High Court. He was also a talented writer and poet.
His Books and Poetry
Mr. Tripathi wrote several books, both in Hindi and English. Some of his well-known works include poetry collections like Manonukriti and Aayu Pankh. His book Sanchayita: Keshari Nath Tripathi was highly praised. He also wrote important legal commentaries, such as his work on The Representation of People Act, 1951. His books have even been translated into other languages. He enjoyed taking part in gatherings of Hindi poets, both in India and abroad.
