Yogi Adityanath (born Ajay Mohan Singh Bisht; 5 June 1972) is an Indian Hindu monk and politician. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Since 2017, he has been the 21st Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is also the only one to have two terms in a row.

Before becoming Chief Minister, Adityanath was a member of India's parliament for nearly 20 years. He was one of the youngest members of parliament in 1998 at age 26. He won five elections in a row from Gorakhpur (Lok Sabha Constituency). In 2017, he moved to state politics in Uttar Pradesh. He became a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council in 2017. Later, in 2022, he became a member of the state Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Adityanath is also the mahant (head priest) of the Gorakhnath Math. This is a Hindu monastery in Gorakhpur. He became the head priest in 2014 after his spiritual teacher, Mahant Avaidyanath, passed away. He is known for his strong beliefs in Hindutva and traditional values. In 2023 and 2024, he was listed among India's most powerful people by The Indian Express.

Early Life and Education

Yogi Adityanath was born Ajay Mohan Singh Bisht on 5 June 1972. His birthplace was Panchur village in Pauri Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh. This area is now part of Uttarakhand. His family was Rajput. His father, Anand Singh Bisht, worked as a forest ranger.

He was the second of seven children, with four brothers and three sisters. He studied mathematics and earned a bachelor's degree. He got this degree from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttarakhand.

Joining the Monastery

Around the 1990s, he left his home. He joined the Ram temple movement in Ayodhya. During this time, he became a student of Mahant Avaidyanath. Avaidyanath was the head of the Gorakhnath Math. He was also leading the Ram temple movement.

After becoming a monk in Gorakhpur, Adityanath often visited his home village. He even helped start a school there in 1998. When Avaidyanath passed away in 2014, Adityanath became the new Mahant. He was made the head of the Math in a special ceremony.

Political Journey

Yogi Adityanath's political journey is linked to a specific type of politics in Uttar Pradesh. This tradition goes back to Mahant Digvijay Nath. Digvijay Nath and his successor, Avaidyanath, were part of the Hindu Mahasabha party. They were elected to Parliament for that party.

Later, the BJP joined the Ayodhya movement. Avaidyanath then joined the BJP in 1991. Adityanath was elected to the Indian Parliament's Lower House (the Lok Sabha) four years after becoming Avaidyanath's successor.

Member of Parliament (MP)

Adityanath was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998. He was only 26 years old, making him the youngest member at that time. He was elected from Gorakhpur five times in a row. He served as an MP in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014.

During his time as an MP, he regularly attended Lok Sabha meetings. He asked many questions and took part in debates.

Forming a Youth Group

After his first election win, Adityanath started his own youth group. It was called Hindu Yuva Vahini. This group became well-known in eastern Uttar Pradesh. It helped Adityanath become more popular.

One of his first major decisions was to help farmers. In April 2017, his government decided to forgive loans for about 8.7 million small farmers in Uttar Pradesh. This amounted to a large sum of money.

For India's Independence Day in 2017, his government asked Muslim religious schools to provide video proof. This was to show that their students had sung the Indian national anthem.

Second Term (2022–Present)

On 10 March 2022, the BJP-led alliance won the state elections again. Adityanath began his second term as Chief Minister. He and his party made history. They were the first Chief Minister and party to return to power after completing a full five-year term in Uttar Pradesh in 37 years.

During the election campaign, Adityanath used the image of a bulldozer. This earned him the nickname "Bulldozer Baba." He is seen by some as a possible future Prime Minister of India.
