Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Nath Sect (also called Nath Sampradaya) is a special group within Hinduism. It's part of the "Shaiva sect," which means its followers mainly worship the Hindu god Shiva. People believe this group started with a mythical god named Dattatrey, who is thought to be an incarnation of Shiva. Dattatrey is considered the "Aadi Guru," or the very first teacher, of the Nath sect.

The Nath tradition involves many unique practices, like Tantras (special rituals), Mantras (chants or spells), and Siddha (yoga exercises). These practices are often linked to ancient knowledge and spiritual powers.

Important Teachers

A very famous saint named Gorakhnath was also part of the Nath sect. He added many new ideas and practices to the tradition, especially Siddha Yoga, which focuses on physical and mental exercises to gain control over the body and mind. Gorakhnath is believed to be a powerful incarnation of Shiva himself, with a lot of knowledge about ancient arts like mesmerism and sorcery.

What Naths Do

Naths are highly respected in the Hindu religious community across India. They are sometimes linked to "Naga Sadhus," who are considered very high-ranking saints. Today, many of these special practices are common in regions like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal in India. Someone who becomes very skilled in these practices might be called a "Tantrik."
