Balram Das Tandon (born November 1, 1927 – died August 14, 2018) was an important Indian politician. He served as the Governor of Chhattisgarh, a state in India.
Before becoming a governor, he was a dedicated volunteer (called a pracharak) for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is a large organization in India. He was also a key leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab.

Balram Tandon's Political Journey
Balram Das Tandon had a long and active career in politics. He started his journey by helping to create the Jan Sangh party in 1951. This party later became part of the BJP.
Early Roles in Punjab
From 1951 to 1957, he worked as the secretary for the Jan Sangh in Punjab. Later, he became the president of the Punjab BJP from 1995 to 1997.
He was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly six times. This means people voted for him to represent them in the state government. He won five times from Amritsar (in 1960, 1962, 1967, 1969, and 1977) and once from Rajpura in 1997.
Serving as a Minister
Balram Das Tandon held important positions in the government of Punjab. He was the Deputy Chief Minister from 1969 to 1970. A Deputy Chief Minister helps the Chief Minister lead the state.
He also served as a cabinet minister two times. This means he was in charge of a specific department in the government, helping to make important decisions for the state. He was a minister from 1977 to 1979 and again from 1997 to 2002.
Challenges and Later Years
In 1975, during a difficult period in India known as the Emergency, Balram Das Tandon faced challenges and was held for about 19 months.
On July 14, 2014, he was chosen to be the Governor of Chhattisgarh. A governor is like the head of a state, representing the President of India. He served in this important role until his death in 2018.
His Family Life
Balram Das Tandon married Brijpal in 1958. She was also involved in the movement for India's freedom.
They had two daughters, Alka Kawatra and Poonam Batra, who live in New Delhi. Their son, Sanjay Tandon, is also involved in politics with the BJP in Chandigarh.
