The Governor of Chhattisgarh is like the main representative of the President of India in the state of Chhattisgarh. They are chosen by the President and live in a special house called Raj Bhavan in Raipur.
The role of Governor of Chhattisgarh started in November 2000 when Chhattisgarh became a separate state from Madhya Pradesh. The first governor was Dinesh Nandan Sahay. The current governor is Ramen Deka, who started on July 31, 2024.

What Does the Governor Do?
The Governor has several important jobs and powers:
- Executive Powers: These are about managing the state, like making important appointments and decisions.
- Legislative Powers: These relate to making laws with the state's lawmaking body, like the Vidhan Sabha (State Assembly).
- Discretionary Powers: These are special powers the Governor can use based on their own judgment.
Besides these powers, the Governor of Chhattisgarh is also the head of all state universities in Chhattisgarh. This means they oversee universities like Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya and Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya.
A Look at the Governors of Chhattisgarh
The first Governor of Chhattisgarh was Dinesh Nandan Sahay. He was a retired police officer and served from November 2000 to June 2003. After him, Krishna Mohan Seth became Governor until January 2007.
Then, E. S. L. Narasimhan took over until January 2010. He was followed by Shekhar Dutt, who served until June 2014.
Sometimes, a Governor from another state might temporarily take on the role for Chhattisgarh. For example, Ram Naresh Yadav, the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, briefly served in 2014.
Balram Das Tandon became Governor in July 2014 and served until he passed away in office on August 14, 2018. He was the only Governor of Chhattisgarh to die while still in office.
After him, Anandiben Patel (who was Governor of Madhya Pradesh) took temporary charge until July 2019. Then, Anusuiya Uikey became Governor and served until February 2023.
The next Governor was Biswabhusan Harichandan, who served until July 30, 2024. The current Governor, Ramen Deka, took office on July 31, 2024.
