Biswabhusan Harichandan, born on August 3, 1934, is an Indian politician. He held important positions in the government. He served as the 7th Governor of Chhattisgarh. He was also the Governor of Andhra Pradesh from 2019 to early 2023. Before that, from 2004 to 2009, he was a Minister in the Government of Odisha. He looked after Law, Revenue, and Fisheries.

Life and Political Journey
Early Political Steps
Biswabhusan Harichandan began his political career in 1971. He joined a political group called the Bharatiya Jana Sangha. He quickly became an important leader in this group. He served as a National Executive Member and State General Secretary.
In 1977, a new political party, the Janata Party, was formed. During a difficult time in India known as "The Emergency," he was held under a special law. After the BJP was formed in 1980, he became its state President. He held this role until 1988. Later, he joined the Janata Dal party. He returned to the BJP in 1996.
Serving in the Assembly
Harichandan was elected to the Odisha State Legislative Assembly five times. This assembly is where laws are made for the state of Odisha. His first election was in 1977 from the Chilika assembly area. He won that election as a member of the BJP.
He was elected again in 1990, this time with a Janata Dal ticket. In 1997, he won for the third time from the Bhubaneswar Central area. He continued to represent this area for three terms in a row.
Minister and Governor Roles
From 2004 to 2009, Harichandan served as a cabinet minister. He was part of a government formed by a partnership between the BJD and the BJP. In this role, he was in charge of important departments like Law, Revenue, and Fisheries.
In July 2019, he was appointed as the 23rd Governor of Andhra Pradesh. A Governor is like the head of a state, representing the President of India. He served in this role until February 2023. On February 23, 2023, he was sworn in as the 7th Governor of Chhattisgarh. His term as Governor of Chhattisgarh ended on July 29, 2024.
Personal Life
In November 2021, Biswabhusan Harichandan was diagnosed with COVID-19. His son, Prithviraj Harichandan, also became a minister. In June 2024, his son took on the roles of Minister of Law, Works, and Excise in the Mohan Charan Majhi Cabinet.
Awards and Recognition
In 2021, Biswabhusan Harichandan received the Kalinga Ratna Award. This award recognizes people who have made great contributions to society.

Biswabhusan Harichandan is also a writer. He has written several books. Some of his books include Marubataas, Mahasangramar Mahanayak, Buxi Jagabandhu, Paika Mutiny, and his autobiography Sangarsha Sarinahin. An autobiography is a book written by a person about their own life.
