Amarsinh Bhilabhai Chaudhary (born July 31, 1941 – died August 15, 2004) was an important Indian politician. He made history by becoming the first adivasi (a term for indigenous tribal people in India) to serve as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He took on this big role in 1985.

His Political Journey

Amarsinh Chaudhary first trained as a civil engineer. He worked for the government for a short time. His political career began when he became a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1970. An MLA is a representative elected by people to make laws for a state.

He served as a junior minister starting in 1972. Later, he held various minister positions in different governments. In 1985, he was elected as an MLA from Vyara. That same year, he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He held this top position until 1989.

After his time as Chief Minister, he continued to be active in politics. He led the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, which is a major political party group in Gujarat. From 2001 to 2002, he was its President.

In 2002, he was again elected as an MLA, this time from Khedbrahma. He became the leader of the Congress party in the state assembly. This also made him the leader of the opposition, meaning he led the main group against the ruling party. He was still serving in this role when he passed away.

His Family Life

Amarsinh Chaudhary was married to Gajraben and they had three children. Later, he also married Nisha Gameti.

His second wife, Nisha Chaudhary, was also a politician. She was elected to the Lok Sabha (India's main parliament) three times in the 1990s. She passed away in 2001.

Amarsinh Chaudhary's son, Tushar Amarsinh Chaudhary, has also followed in his footsteps and become a politician.

His Passing

Amarsinh Chaudhary became very ill in July 2004. He was admitted to a hospital in Ahmedabad. He had serious problems with his liver and kidneys. He sadly passed away on August 15, 2004, due to a heart attack. He had been sick for a long time.
