Because it is so special, Dimminsdale is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). A big part of it, about 23.5 hectares, is owned by Severn Trent Water. This part is looked after by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, who help protect its natural beauty.

What Makes Dimminsdale Special?
Dimminsdale is home to different types of natural habitats. It has areas of semi-natural woodland, which means forests that have grown mostly on their own without too much human interference. These woodlands are important for many plants and animals.
Unique Grasslands
The site also has one of the largest areas of unimproved acidic grassland in the county. "Unimproved" means this grassland has not been changed by farming or chemicals. This makes it a rare and valuable habitat for special plants that like acidic soil.
Amazing Minerals in the Old Mine
Deep within Dimminsdale, you can find an old lead mine once owned by Earl Ferrers. This mine is very interesting to scientists. It contains a rare and complex mix of minerals. These include galena, which is a shiny, metallic lead ore, and zinc blende, which is a common zinc ore.
Scientists are still studying how these unique minerals formed. This makes the old mine a great place for future research and discoveries. It helps us understand more about the Earth's geology.
Visiting Dimminsdale
If you want to explore Dimminsdale, there are public footpaths available. These paths let you walk through the nature reserve part of the site. It's a great way to experience the beautiful woodlands and grasslands for yourself.
