Dinninup is a small town located in the South West part of Western Australia. You can find it nestled between the towns of Boyup Brook and Kojonup.
What's in a Name?
The name Dinninup comes from the Aboriginal people. It is the name of a small brook (a stream) that flows near the town. Surveyors first wrote down this name in 1877. However, what the name actually means is not known today.
How Dinninup Started
Dinninup began its life as a railway station. It was part of the Donnybrook–Katanning railway line, which connected Boyup Brook to Kojonup.
In 1906, early settlers living in the area asked for land to be set aside for a town. They wanted a proper place for people to live and gather. The railway line was finished in 1910. At the same time, the Dinninup railway station officially opened. A few years later, in 1915, the town of Dinninup was officially recognized by the government. This process is called being "gazetted."
