Matías "Dino" Armas Lago was born on November 20, 1941. He is a famous Uruguayan theater director and writer. He has created many plays that have been shown all over the world.

About Dino Armas
Dino Armas grew up in a neighborhood called Villa del Cerro in Montevideo, Uruguay. He lived there until he was 20 years old. His dad, Matías Armas, worked at the port, and his mom, Nicanda Lago Méndez, was a housewife. Dino's dad gave him the nickname "Dino" because it was the name of an Italian soccer player he liked.
Early Life and Inspiration
The neighborhood where Dino grew up, his early life, and his family are very important in the stories he writes. When he was a teenager, he first joined a theater group. This group worked at the Rampla Juniors Fútbol Club in his neighborhood.
Dino Armas as a Teacher
Dino Armas studied to become a teacher. He worked for 30 years teaching in primary schools. He even became a school director before he retired.
His First Play and Success
In 1965, Dino Armas wrote his first play, En otro y último ardiente verano. This play won one of the top three prizes in a theater contest. The contest was organized by the El Tinglado Theater.
Dino Armas is one of the most active playwrights in Uruguay. A playwright is someone who writes plays. His plays have been performed in many places. These include countries in Latin America, the United States, and Europe. In 2009, a movie called El novio de la muerta was made. It was based on two of his plays: Sus ojos se cerraron (from 1992) and Mujeres solas.
Directing and Collaborations
Dino Armas has also produced and directed plays. Some of these were based on stories by other famous writers. These writers include Prosper Mérimée, Saint-Exupéry, and Henry Miller. He has written more than 60 plays himself! Besides directing his own plays, other directors have also staged his works. Some of these directors are Elena Zuasti, Jaime Yavitz , Omar Varela, and Carlos Aguilera.
Awards and Recognitions
Dino Armas has won many awards for his work.
- In 1993, he won the Florencio Award . This was for his play Se ruega no enviar coronas, as the best national author text.
- In 2006, he received the Silver Morosoli Award . This award recognized his long and successful career.
- In 2011, his play Ave Mater won first prize. This was in the unpublished theater-drama category of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Annual Literature Prizes.
- In 2015, he won another Florencio Award. This time, it was for his 50-year career and for his comedy play Sus ojos se cerraron.
- Also in 2015, he received the Golden Candelabrum Award . This award came from the Uruguayan branch of B'nai B'rith.
He has also won awards for plays he wrote especially for children.
