Matías "Dino" Armas Lago (born November 20, 1941) is a famous Uruguayan writer and theater director. He is known for creating many plays that have been performed all over the world.
About Dino Armas
Matías Armas was born in Villa del Cerro, a neighborhood in Montevideo. He lived there until he was 20 years old. His father, Matías Armas, was a port worker. His mother, Nicanda Lago Méndez, was a housewife. Dino got his nickname "Dino" from his father. His dad started calling him that after an Italian football player.
His childhood neighborhood, his early life, and his family are very important in his plays. When he was a teenager, he joined a theater group. This group worked at the Rampla Juniors Fútbol Club in his neighborhood.
Dino Armas also studied to become a teacher. He worked for 30 years as a primary school teacher. He even became a school director before he retired.
In 1965, his first play, En otro y último ardiente verano, won a prize. It was one of the top three winners in a theater contest. This contest was organized by the El Tinglado Theater.
He is one of the most active playwrights in Uruguay. His plays have been shown in many places. These include Latin America, the United States, and Europe. The 2009 movie El novio de la muerta is based on two of his plays. These plays are Sus ojos se cerraron (from 1992) and Mujeres solas.
Armas has also created and directed plays based on other famous writers' works. These writers include Prosper Mérimée, Saint-Exupéry, and Henry Miller. He has written more than 60 plays! He often directs his own plays. Other directors have also staged his works. Some of these directors are Elena Zuasti, Jaime Yavitz , and Omar Varela.
He has won many awards for his work. In 1993, he won the Florencio Award
. This was for his play Se ruega no enviar coronas. In 2006, he received the Silver Morosoli Award . This award recognized his long career. In 2011, his play Ave Mater won first prize. This was from the Ministry of Education and Culture. In 2015, he won another Florencio Award. This was for his 50-year career and for his comedy Sus ojos se cerraron. He also received the 2015 Golden Candelabrum Award . This award came from the Uruguayan branch of B'nai B'rith. He has even won awards for plays written for children!Plays by Dino Armas
