Dinorá Gontijo de Carvalho (born June 1, 1904 – died February 28, 1980) was a very talented Brazilian musician. She was a skilled pianist, a conductor, a music teacher, and a composer. Dinorá de Carvalho achieved many important "firsts" for women in the world of music in Brazil.

Early Life and Musical Journey

Dinorá de Carvalho was born in Uberaba, a city in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Her musical journey started very early. She began playing the piano at just six years old. She studied at the Conservatorio Musical in São Paulo. Her first teachers were Maria Lacaz Machado and Carlino Crescenzo.

Dinorá showed her amazing talent quickly. At only seven years old, she performed her first concert as a pianist. She played music by famous composers like Mozart and Mendelssohn.

Later, she received a special scholarship from the Ministry of Culture. This allowed her to study in Paris with the renowned teacher Isidor Philipp. When she returned to Brazil, she continued to learn from other great musicians. These included Lamberto Baldi, Martin Brawnvieser, Ernest Mehelich, and Camargo Guarnieri.

A Pioneer in Music

After finishing her studies, Dinorá de Carvalho worked in many areas of music. She was a pianist, a composer, a conductor, and a music educator. She broke new ground for women in music.

She became the first woman to join the Brazilian Academy of Music. This was a very important achievement. She also became the first woman to lead an orchestra in Brazil. A conductor who leads an orchestra is sometimes called a "maestro."

Dinorá even started her own orchestra, the Orquestra Feminina de São Paulo. This orchestra was made up entirely of women musicians.

Compositions and Recognition

By 1960, Dinorá de Carvalho had composed around 400 musical pieces. Her talent was recognized by the Culture Ministry. They invited her on a special cultural trip around Europe. On this trip, she performed her own compositions. She also played music by other Brazilian composers.

One of her most famous works was Missa Profundis. This piece won first prize for Best Vocal Work in 1977. It was awarded by the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte. Dinorá de Carvalho passed away in São Paulo in 1980, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.
