Diogo Fernandes (count) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Diogo Fernandes was an important count in the Kingdom of León. He lived a long time ago, in the 900s. His father's name was Fernando, which is how he got the name Fernandes. He might have come from a place called Castile. Diogo Fernandes is known as the ancestor of many important noble families. These families lived in the County of Portugal and León in the 900s and 1000s. Some people think he might have been the brother of other counts, Ero Fernández and Gudesteo Fernández.

Diogo Fernandes arrived in the area of Portugal around the late 800s. He came with Prince Bermudo Ordóñez. Bermudo was the son of King Ordoño I of Asturias. Prince Bermudo had rebelled against his brother, King Alfonso III. He then moved to Coimbra, where he lived and later died before 928.

Count Diogo first appears in official records on April 28, 909. He was confirming a gift made by King Alfonso III. He was also part of the royal court, called the curia regis, for King Ordoño II of León. He also served King Fruela II. Diogo Fernandes was with King Ramiro II when the king set up his court in Viseu. His last known appearance in records was on February 23, 926. On that day, he confirmed a gift from King Ramiro II. This gift was given to Hermenegildo González and his wife, Mumadona Dias. Mumadona was Diogo's daughter.

Diogo's Family

Diogo Fernandes married a woman named Onecca. We don't know much about where she came from. Some people thought she was named Onneca Lucides. They believed she was the daughter of a Portuguese count named Lucídio Vimaranes. But this seems to be a mistake. It might be because of her great-granddaughter, who had a similar name.

Onecca's name, and the names of her son Jimeno and other family members, suggest she might have been from Pamplona. This is because their names sound more Basque than Galician. King Ramiro II of León called Mumadona Dias his tia. This word could mean "aunt" or "older relative." Also, Onecca named one of her daughters Leodegundia. These clues made some historians think Onecca was part of the royal family of Pamplona. They believe she was the daughter of Princess Leodegundia Ordóñez. This princess was thought to be the daughter of King Ordoño I of Asturias.

Onecca appears in records in December 928. She made a gift to the Monastery of Lorvão. Her four children, Munia, Ledegundia, Ximeno, and Mummadomna, confirmed this gift. Hermenegildo González, Mumadona's husband, also confirmed it. Rodrigo Tedoniz, who was probably Leodegundia Díaz's husband, also confirmed it. Onecca made this gift for the soul of "Veremudo dive memorie." This person was Bermudo Ordoñez, son of Ordoño I. He lived in Portugal and was likely the brother of Leodegundia, who might have been Onecca's mother.

His Children

The children of Diogo Fernandes and Onecca were:

  • Munia Díaz She married Alvito Lucides. They were the parents of Lucídio Alvites. Lucídio married Jimena, and they had a daughter named Onecca (Onega) Lucides. This younger Onecca is often confused with Munia's mother, Onecca.
  • Leodegundia Díaz She was probably the wife of Rodrigo Tedoniz. He also confirmed the gift made in 928.
  • Jimeno Díaz (died between November and December 961). He was a count and an important person in the 900s. Before February 949, he married Adosinda Gutiérrez. She was the daughter of Gutier Menéndez and Ilduara Ériz. They had children together. After Jimeno died, Adosinda married Ramiro Menéndez. Ramiro was the son of Count Hermenegildo González. Adosinda and Ramiro were probably the parents of Queen Velasquita Ramírez.
  • Mumadona Dias She first appears in records in February 926. At that time, she was the wife of Count Hermenegildo González.
