The Spanish painted frog (Discoglossus jeanneae) is a special kind of frog. It belongs to the Alytidae family. This frog is found only in Spain. In Spanish, people call it sapillo pintojo meridional.

What Does the Spanish Painted Frog Look Like?

The Spanish painted frog is a medium-sized amphibian. Amphibians are animals that can live both on land and in water. The top of this frog is usually dark brown. It has spots or stripes. Its belly is often white or yellow.

Male frogs have webbing between their back toes. This webbing helps them swim. Female frogs and young males do not have this webbing. During the mating season, male frogs get black rough patches. These patches appear on their toe webbing, throat, belly, and front feet.

This frog is very similar to the Iberian painted frog. But there are some differences. The Spanish painted frog has a shorter nose. Its front feet are also smaller than those of the Iberian painted frog.

Where Do Spanish Painted Frogs Live?

The Spanish painted frog lives only in Spain. You can find it in the southern, eastern, and northeastern parts of the country. It is most common in the southern areas.

These frogs like to live in open spaces. They also live in pine forests and areas with many shrubs. You can find them from sea level up to about 2,000 meters high.

Life and Habits of the Spanish Painted Frog

Scientists do not know a lot about the Spanish painted frog's daily life. But they think it is much like the Iberian painted frog. These frogs are thought to be active all year round.

They usually lay their eggs in small, shallow pools of water.

The Spanish painted frog mostly eats insects and worms. Sometimes, it even eats young frogs or toads from other species. Most of their activity happens at night. The young frogs, called tadpoles, eat plants.

What is the Spanish Painted Frog's Status?

The Spanish painted frog is listed as "near threatened." This means it could become endangered soon. This problem is mainly because of droughts. Droughts are long periods with very little rain. These droughts happen in many places where the frog lives.

It is possible that some groups of these frogs have already disappeared. This has happened along the Mediterranean coast.
