Districts of Japan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Districts of Japan are special areas in Japan that have been part of its local government for a very long time. Think of them like a "county" in countries like the United Kingdom or the United States.

Districts are smaller than the big areas called prefectures, but they are larger than individual towns and villages. Their role has changed over many years, but they are still used in Japan today.

History of Districts

Districts were first created in Japan way back in the 8th century. This was a long time ago!

In the early days, until about the 10th century, the main leader of a district was called a gunji. Later, during the Edo period (which lasted from 1603 to 1868), the person in charge of a district was known as a gundai.

Between 1878 and 1921, during the Meiji period and Taishō period, districts had many important jobs and powers. However, over time, these specific powers were spread out to other parts of the government.
