Divaldo Pereira Franco (born May 5, 1927 – died May 13, 2025) was a famous Brazilian speaker and medium. A medium is someone who believes they can communicate with spirits. Divaldo was known for spreading the ideas of Spiritism, a belief system that includes communication with spirits.
In 1952, he started a charity called Mansão do Caminho in Salvador, Bahia. This organization helps thousands of people, including many children. Divaldo gave the rights to his books, which he said were written with help from spirits (this is called psychography), to this charity and other helpful groups. People sometimes called him the "Paul of Tarsus of Spiritism" because he worked so hard to share his beliefs.

Divaldo Franco's Life Story
Divaldo Pereira Franco was born in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil, on May 5, 1927. From a young age, he believed he could see and hear spirits. At first, his family didn't understand and thought it was strange. But he convinced his mother when he described seeing his deceased grandmother's spirit. Later, his sister Nair passed away in 1939, and Divaldo said he saw her spirit asking for help.
How Divaldo Became a Spiritist
Divaldo learned about Spiritism after he said he was cured of a health problem by a medium. This medium told him he had strong mediumship abilities. In 1945, Divaldo moved to Salvador, Bahia. There, he founded a Spiritist center that later became the Mansão do Caminho ("Mansion of the Way") in 1952.
Books and Spiritual Guides
Many of the books Divaldo published were written through psychography. He said a spirit named Joanna de Ângelis guided him. According to Divaldo, Joanna de Ângelis had lived many lives, including as Joanna, wife of Chuza and Clare of Assisi.
In 1964, Joanna de Ângelis helped Divaldo create his first book, Messe de Amor (which means "Harvest of Love"). Divaldo published over 250 books in total. He said these books were written with the help of 211 different spirits, including famous people like Victor Hugo and Rabindranath Tagore. His books cover many topics, such as philosophy, stories, history, and psychology.
Recognition and Opinions
In 2022, Divaldo Franco received an important award called the Order of Rio Branco. He was known for sharing his opinions on various topics. Some people disagreed with his views, but many Spiritist leaders and scholars defended his right to express himself freely.
