The Divergent trilogy is a popular series of young adult science fiction adventure novels. They were written by American author Veronica Roth. The stories take place in a future version of Chicago, after a big disaster has changed the world. This type of world is called a dystopian society, where things might seem perfect on the surface but are actually unfair or controlled.
The main books in the series are Divergent (published in 2011), Insurgent (2012), and Allegiant (2013). There are also other books that add to the story. Four (2014) shares short stories from the point of view of one of the main characters. Later, a short story called We Can Be Mended (2018) tells what happens five years after the main trilogy ends.
In this world, people are divided into five different groups, called factions. Each faction has a special role and way of life. This system is meant to keep everyone safe and prevent anyone from causing trouble by thinking too independently. The main character, Beatrice Prior, who later calls herself Tris, was born into one faction (Abnegation) but chooses to join another (Dauntless). Tris soon discovers she is "Divergent," meaning she doesn't fit neatly into any one faction. This is a very dangerous secret, because the leaders of some factions want to find and control or even harm Divergent people. Tris must hide her true nature while trying to survive and understand her world.

The World of Divergent
The Divergent series takes place in a future Chicago, where society has been rebuilt after a major conflict. To keep peace, the city's leaders decided to divide everyone into specific groups based on their main personality traits. This system was created to stop arguments and wars by making sure everyone had a clear place and purpose.
The Five Factions
There are five main factions in the Divergent world. Each one values a different quality and has a specific job in society:
- Abnegation (The Selfless): These people value helping others and living simply. They are known for their kindness and often serve as the government leaders.
- Amity (The Peaceful): Amity members are all about happiness and harmony. They work with farming and art, trying to avoid conflict.

At a certain age, teenagers must choose which faction they will join for the rest of their lives. This choice is very important and usually means leaving their families behind.
What it Means to be Divergent
Most people fit well into one of the five factions. However, some individuals are different. They show strong traits from more than one faction. These people are called "Divergent." Being Divergent means you can think independently and are not easily controlled by the faction system.
Why Divergence is Dangerous
The leaders of the Erudite and Dauntless factions see Divergent people as a threat. They believe that Divergents could disrupt the peace and order of their society. Because of this, Divergent individuals must keep their true nature a secret. If their Divergence is discovered, they could face serious danger, including being hunted down or even killed.
The Story of Tris Prior
The main character of the Divergent trilogy is Beatrice Prior, who later changes her name to Tris. She grew up in the Abnegation faction, known for its selfless ways. When it's time for her to choose her faction, Tris surprises everyone by picking Dauntless, the brave and daring faction.
Life in Dauntless
Joining Dauntless is a huge change for Tris. She has to go through intense training, which tests her physical and mental strength. She learns to fight, overcome fears, and live a life of adventure.
