About Veronica Roth
Veronica Roth was born on August 19, 1988, in New York City. She grew up mostly in Barrington, Illinois. Her mother, Barbara Ross, is a painter. Veronica is the youngest of three children. Her parents separated when she was five years old. Her mother later married Frank Ross.
Veronica learned about Christianity in high school. She attended a Christian Bible study group. She has continued to follow this faith.
Education and Early Life
Veronica went to Grove Avenue Elementary School. She then attended Prairie Middle School and Barrington High School. After one year at Carleton College, she moved to Northwestern University. She studied creative writing there.
In 2011, Veronica Roth married photographer Nelson Fitch. They live in the Chicago area.
Veronica Roth's Writing Career
Veronica Roth wrote her first book, Divergent, during a winter break. She was still a senior at Northwestern University. By March, she found a literary agent. Her writing career quickly took off.
The rights to publish Divergent were sold before she even graduated in 2010. The movie rights were sold in March 2011. The book was then printed in April 2011. Her first two novels sold over five million copies by 2013. This was just as the movie based on Divergent was finishing filming.
The Divergent Series on Screen
Veronica Roth sold the movie rights for The Divergent Series to Summit Entertainment. The filming for Divergent started in April 2013. The movie came out in March 2014.
After that, the film adaptation of Insurgent was approved. It was released in March 2015. The third book, Allegiant, was split into two movies. The first part, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, came out in March 2016. The second part was planned but later canceled as a movie. It was going to be a TV film and spin-off series, but those plans were also canceled.
Other Divergent Stories
Roth also wrote four short stories from the point of view of a character named Tobias Eaton. The first one is "The Transfer." It tells about Tobias's life before the Divergent book. It was released in September 2013.
The second story is "The Initiate." These stories were sold as e-books. They were also put together in a book called Four: A Divergent Story Collection. The last two Tobias stories are "The Son" and "The Traitor." This collection came out in July 2014.
There is also a short novel called Free Four: Tobias Tells the Story. It is chapter 13 of Divergent told by Tobias. It was released in 2012.
New Books by Veronica Roth
HarperCollins announced a deal for two more young adult novels by Roth. The first book, Carve the Mark, was published in January 2017. Its sequel, The Fates Divide, came out in April 2018.
An extra story for Divergent, called We Can Be Mended, was announced in December 2016. You could buy it separately or get it with a pre-order of Carve the Mark.
In October 2018, HarperCollins announced another two-book deal. The first is a collection of short stories called The End and Other Beginnings. These stories are set in a future with advanced technology. One story, "Inertia," might even become a movie!
John Joseph Adams Books published Roth's book Chosen Ones in April 2020.
