Veronica Anne Roth (born August 19, 1988) is a famous American writer. She writes novels and short stories. She is best known for her super popular Divergent book series. These books have sold over 35 million copies all around the world!

About Veronica Roth

Veronica Roth was born on August 19, 1988. She was born in New York City. She grew up mostly in Barrington, Illinois. Her mother, Barbara Ross, is a painter. Veronica is the youngest of three children. Her brother and sister live near Chicago.

Veronica's family has roots in Germany and Poland. Her grandparents faced tough times in the past. Veronica learned about Christianity in high school. She has continued to follow it since then.

Her Education

Veronica went to Grove Avenue Elementary School. She also attended Prairie Middle School. Later, she went to Barrington High School. After one year at Carleton College, she moved to Northwestern University. She went there for its creative writing program.

Her Family Life

Veronica Roth married photographer Nelson Fitch in 2011. They live in the Chicago area.

Her Writing Career

Veronica Roth wrote her first book, Divergent, during a winter break. This was in her last year at Northwestern University. She found a literary agent by the next March. Her career quickly took off because her novel was so successful.

The rights to publish her book were sold before she finished college in 2010. The rights to make a movie were sold in March 2011. This was even before the book was printed in April 2011. By the fall of 2013, her first two novels had sold over five million copies. This was around the time the movie based on her first book was finishing filming.

The Divergent Movies

Veronica Roth sold the movie rights for The Divergent Series to Summit Entertainment. Filming for Divergent began in April 2013. The movie came out in March 2014.

On March 21, 2014, Lionsgate decided to make a movie of Insurgent. This film was released on March 20, 2015. On April 11, 2014, Summit Entertainment announced that the third book, Allegiant, would be split into two movies. The first part was called The Divergent Series: Allegiant. It was released on March 18, 2016. The second part was planned as a TV movie and spin-off series. However, these plans were later canceled.

Other Divergent Stories

Roth also wrote four short stories from the point of view of a character named Tobias Eaton. "The Transfer" was the first of these stories. It tells about Tobias's life before Divergent. It came out on September 3, 2013. The second story was "The Initiate". These stories were sold separately as e-books. They were also put together in a book called Four: A Divergent Story Collection. The last two stories about Tobias are "The Son" and "The Traitor". The collection of stories was published in July 2014.

A short novel called Free Four: Tobias Tells the Story was also released. This book is chapter 13 of Divergent told from Tobias's point of view. It was released for Kindle in 2012 in the U.S. and in 2013 in the UK.

Her Other Books

HarperCollins announced a deal with Roth for two more young adult novels. The first book, Carve the Mark, was published on January 17, 2017. Its sequel, The Fates Divide, came out on April 10, 2018.

An epilogue, or extra ending, to Divergent was announced in December 2016. It is called We Can Be Mended. You could buy it by itself or get it as a bonus if you pre-ordered Carve the Mark.

In October 2018, HarperCollins announced another two-book deal with Roth. The first is a collection of short stories. It is called The End and Other Beginnings. These stories take place in a future with advanced technology. One story from the collection, "Inertia", might even become a movie.

John Joseph Adams Books published Roth's book Chosen Ones on April 6, 2020.
