Divergent is a popular young adult fiction novel written by Veronica Roth. It was first published in 2011. This book was Roth's very first novel. She actually started writing Divergent while she was in college.
The story of Divergent takes place in a future world. This world is a dystopia, which means it's a fictional society that seems perfect but is actually very bad. In this world, people are divided into five different groups called factions. Each faction values a special quality.
The five factions are:
- Dauntless: These are the brave people.
- Erudite: These are the smart people.
- Amity: These are the peaceful people.
- Abnegation: These are the selfless people.
- Candor: These are the honest people.
The main character is a sixteen-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior. She discovers that she is "Divergent." This means she doesn't fit into just one faction. Instead, she has qualities from many different groups. Being Divergent is very dangerous in her society.
Divergent became a huge success. It even reached number six on the New York Times Best Sellers lists. The book was so popular that it was later made into a movie. The movie came out in March 2014. Veronica Roth also wrote two more books that continue Beatrice's story. These sequels are called Insurgent and Allegiant.
