The Liga II is Romania's second-highest football league. It used to be called Divizia B until the 2006–07 season. Right now, it's officially called Liga 2 Casa Pariurilor because of its sponsor.

How the Liga II Works

Since it started in 1934, the Liga II has changed its setup many times. Sometimes it had many groups based on different areas of Romania. But since the 2016-17 season, it has been one big group of 20 teams.

Promotion and Relegation

At the end of the regular season, the top six teams play in a special "promotion play-off" group.

  • The top two teams from this play-off get to move up directly to Liga I, which is Romania's top league.
  • The next two teams (3rd and 4th place) get another chance. They play against teams from Liga I to see if they can also get promoted.

The other teams play in "play-out" groups to avoid being sent down to a lower league.

  • There are two play-out groups.
  • The bottom two teams from each play-out group are sent down to Liga III.
  • The two teams that finish third-to-last in their play-out groups play each other. The loser of this match also gets sent down.

New Rules from 2024

Good news for teams! Starting with the 2024-2025 season, the Liga II will have more teams, growing from 20 to 22.

  • To make space, only 4 teams will be sent down at the end of the 2023-24 Liga II season, instead of 5.
  • Six teams will move up from Liga III to join Liga II.

The new format will be similar, but with a few changes:

  • Teams will play each other once in the regular season, making it 21 games for each team.
  • The promotion play-off will still have 6 teams, but they will play each other twice.
  • The relegation play-out will have two groups of 8 teams, and they will play each other once.

The way teams get promoted will stay the same: the top two from the play-off go straight up, and the next two play extra games against Liga I teams.
