The Djiboutian franc is the official money used in Djibouti, a country in Africa. Its special code is DJF. Long ago, one franc was divided into 100 smaller parts called centimes.

History of the Djiboutian Franc

When French Somaliland became a French protectorate in 1884, people used different types of money. They used the French franc, the Indian rupee, and the Maria Theresa thaler. These different currencies were used together. For example, 2 French francs were worth 1 Indian rupee.

From 1908, the value of francs in Djibouti was officially linked to the French franc. Starting in 1910, a bank called the Bank of Indochina began printing banknotes for the area. Between 1919 and 1922, local businesses also made their own paper money and tokens.

In 1948, the first coins made just for Djibouti were created. They were for the "Côte Française des Somalis" (the French Somali Coast). In 1949, the Djiboutian franc became its own currency. It was linked to the US dollar at a rate of 214.392 francs for 1 dollar. This link meant that changes in the French franc's value did not affect Djibouti's money.

In 1952, the government's Public Treasury took over printing paper money. When French Somaliland changed its name to the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas in 1967, the new name appeared on the coins and banknotes. The franc's value changed against the US dollar in 1971 and 1973. First, it became 197.466 francs to the dollar, then 177.721 francs. This value has stayed the same ever since. After Djibouti became independent in 1977, the coins and banknotes got new designs.

Between 1920 and 1922, local businesses made small metal tokens. These tokens were worth 5, 10, 25, and 50 centimes, and 1 franc. They came in different shapes like round, hexagonal, and octagonal.

In 1948, new coins were introduced for 1, 2, and 5 francs. In 1952, 20-franc coins were added, followed by 10-franc coins in 1965. In 1970, 50 and 100-franc coins were made. In 1989, a 500-franc coin was introduced.

Since 2013, new 250-franc coins have been put into use. They help complete the set of coins used in Djibouti.

Between 1910 and 1915, the first banknotes were made for 5, 20, and 100 francs. In 1919, local businesses also printed notes for smaller amounts like 5, 10, and 50 centimes, and 1 franc. After World War I, the French franc lost some of its value. Because of this, 500-franc banknotes were introduced in 1927, and 1000-franc banknotes in 1938. In 1946, 10-franc notes were also added.

In 1952, the government's Public Treasury took over printing paper money. They stopped making 5, 10, and 20-franc notes. Instead, they introduced new 5000-franc notes. In 1970, coins replaced the 50 and 100-franc notes. In 1977, the National Bank of Djibouti started printing all the banknotes. Later, in 1984, a 10,000-franc note was introduced. In 1989, a coin replaced the 500-franc note.

Today, you can find banknotes in values like 40 (special edition), 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10,000 Djiboutian francs.
