Dmitri Sychev (born October 26, 1983) is a famous Russian football player who used to play as a forward or midfielder. He was known for his amazing speed and quick moves on the field. People in the international press even called him "The Russian Michael Owen" because he was so fast.

After his playing career, Dmitri Sychev became a football official. As of early 2024, he is the president of Irtysh Omsk, a football club in his hometown.

Early Life and Training

Dmitri Sychev was born in Omsk, a city located in south-central Russia. He spent his younger years learning and playing football at the well-known Smena football academy in St. Petersburg.

After his time at the academy, he joined FC Spartak Tambov, which was a club in Russia's second division. During this period, he mostly played as a midfielder.

Club Career Highlights

Starting with Spartak Moscow

In January 2002, Dmitri Sychev joined Spartak Moscow. He quickly made a big impact, scoring eight goals in his first 12 matches. It was at Spartak that he changed his main position to a striker.

With Spartak, he helped his team reach the final of the 2002 Commonwealth of Independent States Cup. He scored 6 goals in this tournament, even though he often came in as a substitute.

Moving to Olympique Marseille

In August 2002, Sychev decided to leave Spartak Moscow. After a short ban from playing, he signed a five-year contract with Olympique de Marseille, a big club in France.

While playing in France, he was often used as a midfielder, playing on both the left and right sides of the field. He usually came into games as a substitute.

In his first season back in Russia, Sychev helped Lokomotiv Moscow win the 2004 Russian Premier League title. He also won the Russian Footballer of the Year award that year, scoring 15 goals and making 4 assists in 27 league games.

The next year, in 2005, he continued his success by winning the 2005 Russian Super Cup with Lokomotiv. However, in August 2005, he got a serious knee injury. This injury kept him out for the rest of the year.

In May 2007, Sychev also won the 2006–07 Russian Cup with Lokomotiv. He mostly played as a striker for the team. In 2009, Lokomotiv fans voted him as their player of the season.

Loan Periods to Other Clubs

In March 2013, Sychev went on loan to Dinamo Minsk until July of that year. Later in July 2013, he moved to another Russian club, Volga Nizhny Novgorod, on a year-long loan. He played in 16 league games for Volga but did not score any goals.

On March 16, 2015, Sychev went on another loan, this time to FC Okzhetpes for a season.

Final Club: Pyunik

After taking a break from football for over a year, Sychev signed with FC Pyunik on August 31, 2019. However, he did not play any first-team games for the club. On December 6, 2019, he left Pyunik. Just a few days later, on December 10, 2019, he announced that he was retiring from playing professional football.
