Club Career Highlights
Playing for Spartak Moscow and Marseille
In January 2002, Sychev joined Spartak Moscow. He quickly scored eight goals in his first 12 games. This is when he changed from a midfielder to a striker. With Spartak, he helped his team reach the final of the 2002 Commonwealth of Independent States Cup. He scored 6 goals in that tournament, even though he usually came in as a substitute.
Later in 2002, Sychev decided to leave Spartak. Because he had already signed a contract, he was not allowed to play football for four months. After this break, he signed a five-year contract with Olympique de Marseille in France. In France, he often played as a midfielder and was usually a substitute player.
Time at Lokomotiv Moscow
In 2004, Sychev came back to Russia and joined Lokomotiv Moscow. He signed a four-year contract with them. In his first season back, he helped Lokomotiv win the 2004 Russian Premier League title. He also won the Russian Footballer of the Year award, scoring 15 goals and making 4 assists.
The next year, in 2005, he won the 2005 Russian Super Cup with the club. However, in August 2005, he got a serious knee injury. This meant he could not play for the rest of the year. In May 2007, Sychev also won the 2006–07 Russian Cup with Lokomotiv. He mostly played as a striker, but sometimes as a midfielder. In 2009, Lokomotiv fans voted him as their best player of the season.
Loan Periods
Later in his career, Sychev played for other clubs on loan. In March 2013, he went to FC Dinamo Minsk for a short time. In July 2013, he moved to FC Volga Nizhny Novgorod for a year. He played 16 games for Volga but did not score any goals. In March 2015, he went on loan to FC Okzhetpes.
Last Club and Retirement
After not playing football for over a year, Sychev joined FC Pyunik in August 2019. However, he did not play any first-team games for them. In December 2019, he left Pyunik and announced that he was retiring from playing football.
International Career
Dmitri Sychev was chosen to play for the Russian national team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was very young, only 18 years and 222 days old, making him the youngest player from Russia or the Soviet Union to play in the World Cup.
