Dmitri Sychev (born October 26, 1983) is a famous Russian football player who used to play as a forward or midfielder. He was known for his amazing speed and quick moves on the field. People in the international press even called him "The Russian Michael Owen" because he was so fast.
After his playing career, Dmitri Sychev became a football official. As of early 2024, he is the president of Irtysh Omsk, a football club in his hometown.

Early Life and Training
Dmitri Sychev was born in Omsk, a city located in south-central Russia. He spent his younger years learning and playing football at the well-known Smena football academy in St. Petersburg.
After his time at the academy, he joined FC Spartak Tambov, which was a club in Russia's second division. During this period, he mostly played as a midfielder.
Club Career Highlights
Starting with Spartak Moscow
In January 2002, Dmitri Sychev joined Spartak Moscow. He quickly made a big impact, scoring eight goals in his first 12 matches. It was at Spartak that he changed his main position to a striker.
With Spartak, he helped his team reach the final of the 2002 Commonwealth of Independent States Cup. He scored 6 goals in this tournament, even though he often came in as a substitute.
Moving to Olympique Marseille
In August 2002, Sychev decided to leave Spartak Moscow. After a short ban from playing, he signed a five-year contract with Olympique de Marseille, a big club in France.
While playing in France, he was often used as a midfielder, playing on both the left and right sides of the field. He usually came into games as a substitute.
Success with Lokomotiv Moscow
In early 2004, Sychev returned to Russia and joined Lokomotiv Moscow. He signed a four-year contract with the club. His arrival helped the team change their playing style, making their attack stronger.
In his first season back in Russia, Sychev helped Lokomotiv Moscow win the 2004 Russian Premier League title. He also won the Russian Footballer of the Year award that year, scoring 15 goals and making 4 assists in 27 league games.
The next year, in 2005, he continued his success by winning the 2005 Russian Super Cup with Lokomotiv. However, in August 2005, he got a serious knee injury. This injury kept him out for the rest of the year.
In May 2007, Sychev also won the 2006–07 Russian Cup with Lokomotiv. He mostly played as a striker for the team. In 2009, Lokomotiv fans voted him as their player of the season.
Loan Periods to Other Clubs
In March 2013, Sychev went on loan to Dinamo Minsk until July of that year. Later in July 2013, he moved to another Russian club, Volga Nizhny Novgorod, on a year-long loan. He played in 16 league games for Volga but did not score any goals.
On March 16, 2015, Sychev went on another loan, this time to FC Okzhetpes for a season.
Final Club: Pyunik
After taking a break from football for over a year, Sychev signed with FC Pyunik on August 31, 2019. However, he did not play any first-team games for the club. On December 6, 2019, he left Pyunik. Just a few days later, on December 10, 2019, he announced that he was retiring from playing professional football.
International Career for Russia
Dmitri Sychev was chosen to play for the Russian national team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. At 18 years and 222 days old, he became the youngest player to ever play for Russia or the Soviet Union at a World Cup.
In that tournament, he scored one goal and helped set up three others. This goal made him the fourth youngest goalscorer in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
Sychev was also part of Russia's team for UEFA Euro 2008. Even though he played as a striker for his club, he was used as a midfielder for the national team under coach Guus Hiddink. He played his last game for Russia in 2010.

Life After Playing Football
On January 30, 2024, Dmitri Sychev was named the president of Irtysh Omsk. This is the football club from his hometown. The club plays in the third division of Russian football.
Other Interests and Activities
Besides football, Dmitri Sychev enjoys other sports like ice hockey. He is a big fan of his hometown ice hockey team, Avangard Omsk. He also likes playing tennis and billiards.
Outside of sports, Sychev plays the guitar. He even performed rapping at the MTV Russia Music Awards ceremony in Moscow with his national teammate Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. Dmitri Sychev speaks English and French, in addition to his native Russian.
In 2007, he earned a degree from the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism. Sychev also appeared in the movie Coach, which was released in 2018. In the film, he played a character named Dodin, who scored the winning goal for his team. He also appeared in the seventh season of the ice show contest Ice Age.
