What is the Doll Asylum?
The Doll Asylum is a fun and slightly spooky experience. It's a place where you can see a huge collection of dolls. Many people visit it each year during the Halloween season.
How It All Began
Mark Williams and Heidi Loutzenhiser created the Doll Asylum. They moved to a new neighborhood in Portland in 2010. They wanted to meet their new neighbors. So, they decided to host an open house.
Mark saw a doll leaning against a tree one day. This gave him the idea for a doll-themed event. He enjoys seeing how visitors react to the displays. He said it makes him happy.
The Growing Doll Collection
When the Doll Asylum first opened, it had a few dolls. Over time, visitors started bringing their own "creepy" dolls. These dolls were added to the collection.
By 2012, the couple had over 700 dolls. By 2015, the collection grew to more than 1,000 dolls! The first 75 dolls belonged to Heidi's mother. Mark mentioned that dolls are great for this. He said they are cheap and can look a bit spooky. Most dolls are donated or bought from thrift stores.
Where is it Now?
The Doll Asylum is open for a short time each Halloween season. It is free to visit. In 2017, the Doll Asylum moved. It is now located in Astoria, Oregon. The open houses still happen there around Halloween.
