About Dolomite

A Look Back: Dolomite's History

Dolomite started as a simple train stop in 1883. It was a "siding" on the Carson and Colorado Railroad. This meant trains could pull off the main track there. The community began to grow in 1885. This happened when the Inyo Marble Company opened a quarry nearby. A quarry is a place where stone is dug out of the ground.

Dolomite on the Big Screen

Dolomite's unique look has made it famous in movies. Several Western films have been shot in this area. These movies used Dolomite's natural scenery as their backdrop. Some of the films include Sinister Journey (1948) and From Hell to Texas (1958). Other movies filmed here are Hell Bent for Leather (1960) and An Eye For An Eye (1966). You might also see Dolomite in Nevada Smith (1966) and Waterhole No. 3 (1967).
