Domingo Barret Echeverri was an important leader in Yucatán, Mexico. He served as the temporary governor of Yucatán in 1847. This was a very challenging time for the region. Yucatán was facing a major conflict called the War of the Castes. At the same time, Mexico was at war with the United States of America. During these difficult events, Yucatán decided to stay neutral, meaning it did not pick a side in the war with the United States.

Domingo Barret: A Leader in Tough Times

Domingo Barret was part of a political group led by Santiago Méndez Ibarra. This group represented the interests of the city of Campeche. They were often in disagreement with another group led by Miguel Barbachano, who represented the city of Mérida. These political rivalries were happening just before Yucatán and Campeche decided to separate. This separation occurred right at the start of the Caste War.

What Was the War of the Castes?

The Caste War was a long and difficult conflict that took place in the Yucatán Peninsula. It lasted from 1847 until 1901. It was a fight between the native Maya people and the people of European descent. This war caused a lot of problems and suffering in the region.

Yucatán's Neutral Stance

When Domingo Barret was governor, Yucatán was also dealing with the Mexican-American War. This was a big war between Mexico and the United States. Yucatán chose to remain neutral. This meant they did not send soldiers or support either side in that conflict. They wanted to focus on their own problems, especially the Caste War.

Political Challenges and Power Changes

Governor Barret and his allies, like Santiago Méndez Ibarra, tried hard to solve the problems caused by the Caste War. They even considered offering Yucatán's independence to other countries in exchange for help. This shows how desperate the situation was becoming.

Eventually, the city of Campeche decided to ask Miguel Barbachano to return from Cuba. He was given the important task of negotiating peace with the Maya people. On October 3, 1847, Domingo Barret handed over his power to Santiago Méndez. Méndez then passed the leadership to Miguel Barbachano, who took charge of the serious conflict that had begun.
