Miguel Barbachano y Tarrazo (born September 29, 1807 – died December 17, 1859) was an important politician from Yucatán. He served as governor of Yucatán five times between 1841 and 1853.

Miguel Barbachano was born in Campeche. His parents were Manuel Barbachano and Maria Josefa Tarrazo.

Yucatán's Independence Efforts

Miguel Barbachano strongly believed that Yucatán should be independent from Mexico. However, Yucatán declared its independence twice when he was not in power. Both times, it was Barbachano who helped Yucatán rejoin Mexico.

He often shared power with Santiago Méndez. Méndez generally preferred Yucatán to stay united with Mexico. But Méndez was sometimes forced to declare independence because of the actions of the Mexican leader, Antonio López de Santa Anna.

The final time Yucatán rejoined Mexico was because of a big problem called the Caste War of Yucatán. This was a serious conflict that made reunification necessary.

Governor of Yucatán

Miguel Barbachano served as the leader of Yucatán for several periods. He was the governor during these times:

  • From June 11, 1841, to October 13, 1841.
  • From August 18, 1842, to November 14, 1843.
  • From May 15, 1844, to June 2, 1844.
  • From January 1, 1846, to January 21, 1847.
  • From March 26, 1848, to February 13, 1853.
