Early Life and Art Training
Domingo Valdivieso was born in Mazarrón, Spain. His father was an officer in the Spanish Army. Domingo started his schooling in his hometown.
Later, he moved to Murcia for more studies. There, people noticed he was very good at drawing. So, his teachers told him to study art. His first art teacher was a local artist named Juan Albacete.
When he was eighteen, Domingo moved to Madrid. He got a job working for the government. But he also spent his free time studying art. He went to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, a famous art school.
Becoming a Professional Artist
By 1853, Domingo decided he wanted to be a full-time painter. He left his government job to focus on art. He also started making lithographs. These are a type of printmaking.
He created pictures for books like General Staff of the Spanish Army. He also illustrated History of the Royal Spanish Navy.
In 1861, Domingo received a special grant. This money helped him study art in Paris and Rome. While in these cities, he was influenced by other artists. One important artist was Eduardo Rosales. He was also inspired by the Nazarene movement, a group of artists who wanted to bring back religious art.
Art Exhibitions and Teaching
Domingo Valdivieso showed his art in many important exhibitions. He participated in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He won medals there in 1862, 1864, and 1866.
In 1866, he became a professor. He taught anatomical painting at the San Fernando Academy. This meant he taught students how to paint the human body correctly. He won another medal at the Exhibition in 1871.
Valdivieso's Artworks
Domingo Valdivieso is best known for his religious paintings. But he also painted many other subjects. He created historical scenes, portraits of people, and mythological scenes.
He also made costumbrista works. These paintings showed everyday life and customs. Many of these paintings showed scenes from Italy and Murcia. The largest collection of his paintings is at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Murcia
